If Jay Gatsby were around, he wouldn’t have missed Smart Meetings’ mountain/desert event, resplendent with dapper hats, swanky parties and fun-filled networking. The event, held Aug. 16–19, melded cutting-edge technology with throwback-era style.
Attendees gathered at Atlantis Casino Resort Spa in Reno and immediately got acquainted with Poken, a networking device that allows users to exchange contact information with the tap of a key chain. In lieu of business cards, Poken enables registrants to seamlessly exchange digital content.
After an opening reception and welcome from speaker Robert Strong, the group toured the AAA Four Diamond Atlantis, with 824 guest rooms and 50,000 sq. ft. of flexible space. It’s also the only resort that is connected via walkway to 500,000 sq. ft. of space at Reno-Sparks Convention Center.
The tour ended in the ballroom, where a live band and 1920s decor got the party started. Attendees donned feather boas and fedoras during a sparkling cocktail reception and networking dinner. Flappers in jeweled headbands posed with men in pinstriped suits.
Marketing consultant Cary Broussard was one of the keynote speakers during the three-day event. She gave a rousing talk on how compassion, collaboration and culture make a difference to the bottom line, explaining how effective management practices drive profits and increase clients. Planner favorite and MPI Chairman Michael Dominguez took a look at business models in today’s economic environment and shared his keen insights on RevPAR projections in a changing market.
An eventful second day closed with a dinner at the National Automobile Museum. Attendees walked the exhibits, dressed in costumes from eras fitting the venue’s theme. Old-fashioned models from the early 1900s to late 1960s are on display. The next day, the group departed for Harrah’s Lake Tahoe Hotel and Casino, an 18-story tower with 512 guest rooms and 25,000 sq. ft. of meeting space. The intimate group continued with one-on-one appointments, and suppliers were able to pitch their destinations and properties on social media.
