Top 10 Culinary Destinations in the World

From Asian hawker stalls to seaside Mediterranean locales, traveling foodies have chosen their favorite places for the best eats. Based on an open Facebook poll, CNN recently released the top 10 culinary destinations around the world. Travel with an appetite to these countries, which offer exotic flavors and passion for their food.

1) Taiwan took in the most votes for their stinky tofu and beef noodle soups. The capital city, Taipei, has around 20 streets devoted to eating where hungry travelers can find oyster omelets, braised pork rice and gua bao steamed sandwiches. The country’s culinary heritage spans from Min Nan, Teochew and Hokkien Chinese communities to Japanese cuisine

2) The mix between Asian and Hispanic flavor has made the Philippines the second most popular foodie stop. The tropical country of 7,000 islands offers such delicacies as balut (duck embryo) and mole crickets for the adventurous. For a traditional Filipino dish try adobo, made with meat cooked in vinegar, salt, garlic, pepper, soy sauce and other spices.

3) Italian food has enamored Americans for ages. Head to the homeland for fresh-made pasta, zesty tomato sauces and delicious creaminess, with variations across each region. Sicily offers crunchy seafood arancini, Naples has some of the world’s best pizza and Modena is known for its Parmigiano-Reggiano.

4) Be it red, green or yellow, Thailand knows how to do curry. Influenced by Chinese, Malaysian, Indonesian and Burmese cooking, Thai cuisine is filled with herbs and spices. Spicy, sour, salty, sweet, chewy, crunchy and slippery can often be found in a single dish. For something different than the usual pad Thai or cashew chicken, try som tom (spicy papaya salad) larb moo (minced pork with lime juice, fish sauce, mint and chili) or ko moo yang (grilled pork neck).

5) Japans diverse seafood palette is known around the world for its delicate precision and simplicity. Divert from the standard California roll to sample sliced sea urchin roe, abalone, octopus or blowfish, which adds a side of danger to your plate. Aside from sushi and sashimi, other culinary delights include multi-course kaiseki meals and kyodo ryori, a series of regional dishes unique to each city.

6) Malaysia’s ethnic melting pot makes for some of the most flavorful food in Southeast Asia. If your stomach can handle it, try a plate of mie goring (fried noodles) from the bustling hawker stalls sending up smoke from the back alleyways. Roti canai is a national favorite, made with fried Indian-style bread and tender curried chicken. In Malaysia, Indonesian, Chinese and Indian flavors cross over for some of the most delicious cuisine around.

7) Heavily influenced by Cantonese food, Hong Kong could be considered dim sum capital of the world. Cart-style dumplings and rice noodle rolls dominate the lunch-time menu. But this cosmopolitan city with an international population also has a number of standout fusion dishes. Street stalls offer everything from Peking duck pancakes and sweet egg waffles to spicy Chongqing noodles and skewered curry fishballs.

8) Spice is king in Indian cuisine, which should be considered in a category of its own. With the help of saffron, cumin, cardamom and cloves, to name a few, the flavor spectrum runs the gamut. Try Hyderabad’s fragrant mutton biryani, a rice dish made with slow-cooked meat. For seafood, head east to Goa, a former Portuguese colony that left its traces behind in dishes like vindaloo. India also has some of the best vegetarian cuisine, as many citizens do not consume meat for religious purposes.

9) Colorful salads and roasted meats are the hallmark of Greece’s gastronomy. This Mediterranean country has a bountiful supply of lemons, tangy feta cheese and Kalamata olives to thank for its rustic flavor. Sample some well-known dishes such as moussaka with layered meats and cheese, grape leaf-wrapped dolmades or sweet and sticky baklava.

10) Vietnam’s cuisine made the list for its unique, French-inspired local dishes. Perhaps the most widely-recognized dish is pho, a steamy broth of aromatic herbs, noodles, sprouts and meat. Try the open-air markets and single-dish food stalls for more specialties like rice paper-thin ban cuon rolls, barbecued pork cutlets or banh mi, a cold-cut and veggie in a French baguette—not your average sandwich.

Atlanta Meeting Market

Atlanta is living up to its nickname, Hotlanta. Statistics indicate that the Greater Atlanta meeting and hotel market is hot.

Convention Bookings Are Up

Atlanta is a premiere convention destination in the South, and convention bookings in the destination are up. Reports indicate that from January to April, 2015, Atlanta has met or exceeded its target pace. In May and September, 2014, the city actually exceeded its target pace percentage by 143% and 132%, respectively.

Gazing toward the future, the eight-year projection for bookings from March 2015 onward indicates a robust convention market.  With the exception of 2020, the number of definite room nights has outpaced the target pace in every year.

Hotel Market Looks Strong

In Hotel News Now, Paul Breslin and Hanjie Tang report that the Greater Atlanta hotel market has strongly rebounded from the recent economic downturn and is demonstrating solid growth—showing increases in occupancy, room rates and per-room revenue. They point out from April 2014 to April 2015, RevPAR in Atlanta has grown 10.7%, rates have increased 5.6% and occupancy is up 4.8%. The market is experiencing strong growth in both economy and upscale properties.

According to STR, the Atlanta market features 792 properties with 94,118 rooms. April 2015 figures from STR show Atlanta’s year-to-date occupancy rate is 71.2%; ADR is $96.70; and RevPAR is $68.83. All three metrics indicate improvement over 2014, with 4.8% growth in occupancy, 5.6% growth in ADR and 10.7% growth in RevPAR.

Breslin and Tang also point out that over the past few years, the growth of demand for hotel rooms in Atlanta has outpaced the growth of supply. According to STR data, the market’s RevPAR growth rate was 13.1% in 2014. This strong growth is forecasted to continue in 2015, with year-end RevPAR predicted to show at $67.06.

Transient travelers account for approximately 60% of room sales in Atlanta, according to STR. Group demand has fluctuated; showing monthly growths of nearly 30% in 2012 and drops of close to 20% in 2013. In general, group sales make up approximately 36% of Atlanta’s room sales.

Other Key Indicators

As Breslin and Tang report, other key indicators signify healthy growth in Atlanta. From 2011 to 2014, population in the city increased by 1.5%, 1.3% and 1.6%, respectively, according to the Metro Atlanta Chamber. Meanwhile, the unemployment rate decreased from 8.8% to 7.8% and to 6.8% from 2012 to 2014, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Moreover, the city’s gross domestic product, total personal income and per capita personal income all grew three years in a row from 2010 to 2013.

When people speak of Hotlanta, they are usually referring to active nightlife or the warm summer temperatures in Georgia’s premiere city. For planners, however, Hotlanta has meaning as a happening destination for meetings and conventions.

baggage

Airline passengers could be subject to more stringent carry-on baggage regulations. On June 9, International Air Transport Association (IATA) announced new guidelines to better accommodate carry-on bags on board aircrafts with at least 120 seats.

In an effort to free up packed overhead bins, the policy suggests optimal carry-on baggage size is 21.5 inches tall by 13.5 inches wide by 7.5 inches deep. The new size is smaller than current limits imposed by many airlines. American Airlines, Delta Airlines and United Airlines currently accept bags up to 22 inches tall by 14 inches wide by 9 inches deep, while Southwest and Virgin America permit sizes up to 24 inches tall by 16 inches wide by 10 inches deep.

“The development of an agreed optimal carry-on baggage size will bring common sense and order to the problem of differing sizes for carry-on bags. We know the current situation can be frustrating for passengers. This work will help to iron out inconsistencies and lead to an improved passenger experience,” said Tom Windmuller, IATA’s senior vice president for airport, passenger, cargo and security.

Rules may vary according to airlines, which have the choice to opt-in or out of the new initiative. Details of how the baggage guideline will be implemented are also unclear and could vary among different carriers. It also raises the likelihood of having to check in bags, which typically costs $25 each way.

At least eight international airlines will soon introduce the carry-on baggage policy. These include Air China, Avianca, Azul, Cathay Pacific, China Southern, Emirates, Lufthansa and Qatar Airways. U.S. carriers have yet to accept the new requirements.

In a statement, IATA said it is currently developing a new model with several luggage manufacturers, including Okoban, a baggage tracking solutions provider. The new bags will carry a “Cabin OK” label with IATA and Okoban logos, with an identification code indicating that the carry-on baggage meets specifications. They are expected to be in stores by the end of the year.

Marriott First to Stream Netflix

Marriott Hotels wants its guests to feel more at home. On June 10, the brand announced a partnership with internet-television service Netflix. Now, existing users can stream movies and television shows directly to hotel room televisions at select Marriott properties.

Instead of watching television shows on smart phones or laptops, hotel guests can simply sign onto their accounts through a Netflix app offered on Internet-connected, wide-screen HDTVs. According to an Accenture report, more than half of American consumers watch television programs online. During a test done by Marriott, 26 percent of guests used Internet apps on guest room televisions, with the majority choosing Netflix.

“Our collaboration with Netflix responds to changing consumer preferences in the way our guests access and watch content, while recognizing the leading role Netflix is playing in driving this transformation,“ says Matthew Carroll, vice president of brand management at Marriott Hotels. “Because consumers are choosing to take their streaming content with them when they travel, Marriott Hotels is making the industry’s first rollout of Netflix a priority.”

Netflix is currently available at six properties, including New York Marriott East Side, San Jose Marriott, Princeton Marriott, Newport Marriott, Dallas/Fort Worth Marriott Solana and Bethesda Marriott Suites. Marriott plans to extend Netflix to 100 properties by the end of 2015, and to nearly all of its properties in the U.S. by the end of 2016.

The new launch is the first of its kind, permitting the international hotel chain to tap into Netflix’s 62 million customer base. Conversely, Netflix might acquire more first-time users who can subscribe to the service through the guest room app. Guests log in once during their stay and are automatically signed-out upon checking out of the hotel.

“Our members tell us they want to watch Netflix anytime, in any place where they have an Internet connection,” says Bill Holmes, global head of business development for Netflix. “Through our partnership with Marriott, they’ll get to watch their favorite movies, TV shows and Netflix originals on big screens just like they do at home.”

Carlsbad City Beach

San Diego County is larger than Rhode Island and Delaware. Combined. As much as we love downtown San Diego and its vast collection of meeting venues and offsite activities, the county has many other meeting-friendly properties and activities that should not be overlooked.

There is a fresh meeting push coming from Carlsbad, 35 miles north of downtown San Diego. Carlsbad is best known as home of Legoland California Resort and epicenter of the wellness movement. But that’s just two key attractions in Carlsbad, which also boasts a stunning oceanfront location, great outdoor opportunities and key meeting resorts.

We’d like to provide a little northern exposure for San Diego County with five reasons to meet in Carlsbad:

1. Wellness has been part of the city’s heritage for 130 years and Carlsbad celebrates this connection with Wellness Month in May. Mineral springs were first tapped in 1882, helping to create an acclaimed spa destination. One of the wellness leaders is Omni La Costa Resort & Spa, which features a 43,000-square-foot spa. Omni is home to the Chopra Center for Well Being, a campus founded by Dr. Deepak Chopra that features cutting-edge, physician-caliber treatments. The city of Carlsbad even offers free yoga in Carlsbad Village.

“According to the American Psychological Association, 75 percent of adults reported experiencing moderate to high levels of stress in the past month and nearly half reported that their stress has increased in the past year,” says Sam Ross, executive director of Visit Carlsbad. “Carlsbad offers the ultimate solutions to distress, relax, recharge and reconnect in an idyllic Sothern California setting.”

2. Legoland California Resort introduced a new Star Wars model in March. It spans eight feet across and includes Lego models of stormtroopers, fighter pilots and a star ship. This summer, the theme park will debut Lego Friends Heartlake City based on a series of toys that focuses on the lives of five girls.

3. Stellar resorts provide exquisite meeting and event space and serve as another reason to meet in Carlsbad. Among the properties with event space are Hilton Carlsbad Oceanfront Resort & Spa (25,000 sq. ft. of indoor and outdoor space), Park Hyatt Aviara Resort (78,000 sq. ft. of indoor and outdoor space) and Sheraton Carlsbad Resort & Spa (17,481 sq. ft. indoors).

4. Carlsbad is rich with outdoor activities, especially its Pacific Ocean coastline. There are also opportunities to spot rare birds around the shores of Batiquitos Lagoon, paddle Agua Hedionda Lagoon or hike the Hosp Grove Trail, offering views of the Buena Vista Lagoon and the ocean.

5. Highway 78 that cuts across northern San Diego County is fondly referred to as “Hops Highway.” While San Diego is considered “America’s Capital of Craft,” as in craft-brewed beer, Carlsbad is one of the key cities in the county-wide brew tour that includes nearly 200 pubs and restaurants. Pizza Port Brewing Company, with five locations including two in downtown Carlsbad, is credited with helping to spearhead San Diego’s craft brewing industry.

So cheers to San Diego and its northern reaches. There are lots of reasons to meet in Carlsbad.

Most Popular Cuisines in America

Huffington Post and Yelp  teamed up to bring an extensive list of the most common cuisines in each state. Using information from public records and data from restaurant listings, Yelp “calculated the percentage of total restaurants each cuisine represented in a given state.” Although you might think American staples such as hot dogs and hamburgers make the top of the list, you are in for surprise because each state has its own sense of flavor. View the report and see what’s popular in your region. Continue reading “Most Popular Cuisines in America”

Electronic Devices Focus Of Increased U.S. Airport Security
It happens every day, in airports all across the country. Transportation Security Administration officers inform innocent travelers that their nail polish remover, souvenir Yankees baseball bat or the decorative knife they used to cut their wedding cake is prohibited in carry-on luggage. Although the passenger could ostensibly return to the ticketing counter and check the item, or mail it to themselves from an airport postal station, most don’t. After some initial grumbling, they willingly surrender the article(s). Continue reading “The Odyssey of Banned TSA Items”

aviation_safetyThe National Transportation Safety Board wants passenger planes making long-haul flights over water to be equipped with better technology so rescuers can find them more easily in the event of a crash. The organization is recommending that airlines be outfitted with tamper-resistant transmitters that document its location, minute by minute, using satellite technology. It also wants the government to require planes to carry low-frequency, underwater beacons whose signals can be detected by search vessels, and wants the beacons to be equipped with batteries that will last for at least 90 days following a crash, rather than the 30 days currently required.
