Plano

When the Marriott Dallas/Plano Legacy Town Center opened in 2000, few anticipated the number of shopping and dining options that would mushroom around the hotel. The Shops at Legacy has grown into a 2,600-acre master planned development of more than 80 boutique retail stores and restaurants, business headquarters, condominiums and four other hotels.

Cru-Wine-Bar

Last week, Visit Plano gave Smart Meetings a tour of Plano’s meeting venues, as well as local attractions and activities for groups visiting Greater Dallas. Mexican Sugar is one of the many restaurants at The Shops at Legacy, and serves upscale Mexican cuisine and small-batch cocktails. For wine tastings afterward, stroll down to Cru Food & Wine Bar to sample one of the popular wine flights of pinot noirs, chardonnays and more. Visitors can look forward to more dining, shopping and nightlife options in Legacy West, a $2 billion project that will complete the other half of the complex.

Southfork-ranch

If groups are craving an authentic experience of a Texas ranch, they can head to Southfork Ranch, which may look familiar to fans of the hit television series Dallas. Exterior scenes from the show were shot on the sprawling 300-acre grounds, including the infamous Ewing Mansion. Visitors can witness the crime scene in which one of the main characters, J.R. was shot. Southfork Ranch also offers 63,000 sq. ft. in its event center, which regularly hosts special events and corporate functions.

Historic downtown Plano is equally charming, with quaint eateries and old brick buildings. Our group dined on thin-crust pizza at Urban Crust. The multi-level restaurant offers private dining and a buzzy rooftop ice bar. Further down the road, ArtCentre of Plano features art galleries from local artists as well as national shows. Groups can also visit Courtyard Theater and Cox Building Playhouse—two stages where various theater companies perform.

Irving

Not many convention centers look like Irving Convention Center, which could be mistaken for a modern art museum with its geometric facade and industrial copper patina. To avoid appearing like a traditional convention center, the building was designed as two boxes stacked and rotated on top of each other to provide shaded outdoor areas and lots of natural light inside.

plano and irving

While visiting Irving, many business travelers choose to stay at The Four Seasons Resort & Club at Dallas Las Colinas, the only AAA Five Diamond resort in the state.  The TPC 18-hole par-70 golf course is a main attraction of the four acre property and is where the AT&T Byron Nelson tournament is annually held. Health and wellness are also a big focus—the resort recently unveiled a $6 million upgraded fitness facility. It’s also one of the few places to offer aerial or anti-gravity yoga, a trendy new exercise that includes various poses within the confines of a sash hanging from the ceiling. Yogis should be prepared to check their fears of being suspended midair at the door.

Visit Irving showed our group two different dining experiences that are popular with locals. The Ranch at Las Colinas prides itself on locally-sourced menu items with a distinct Texas bend. Try elk tacos, fried gulf oysters or a juicy farm-raised steak. The restaurant has three event facilities that can hold between 100-150 people in each space. During the week and on Saturdays, there’s also live music from the best up-and-coming bands around the state.

On the other side of town, Big State Fountain Grill is a throwback gem that serves up retro burgers and malted milkshakes and plays 1950s jukebox hits all day long. Colorful tiles, kitschy decor and old photographs line the walls and keep the regulars coming since it opened in 1948. Diners can take home souvenirs of old-fashioned candy bars, such as Coconut Long Boys, Sugar Daddies and Slo Pokes.

Yesteryear continues next door at Texas Musicians Museum, a dedicated facility that pays tribute to the likes of Willie Nelson, Janice Joplin, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Buddy Holly and many more renowned performers. Stroll through the various exhibits, which display gold records, old handwritten letters and iconic outfits worn by the musicians. The museum reopened in the new facility earlier this year and has an outdoor theater for up to 600.

Hosting a meeting or event in Maui is never a hard sell. The weather is great, the food is fresh, and the beaches are flawless. But reasons to meet here are expanding, as is the meeting space.

Ideally situated on 40 tropically landscaped oceanfront acres along a three-mile stretch of the famed Ka’anapali Beach, Hyatt Regency Maui Resort and Spa boasts an authentic Hawaiian experience. The resort offers 806 guest rooms, including 31 suites, each with a private lanai with panoramic views. In 2016, the resort was awarded an AAA Four Diamond Award for the 21st consecutive year (and if you keep scrolling, you’ll begin to see why).

The resort recently underwent a multi-million renovation and was awarded LEED-EBOM Silver certification, positioning it at the forefront of sustainability in Hawaiian hospitality.

This week, the hotel is debuting its newly renovated Monarchy Ballroom, open-air promenade and other refreshed meeting space, and has invited meeting planners and writers to the island to celebrate the grand reopening.

The wildlife that can be found on the property is incredible–from flamingos and swans to penguins and cockatoos.

A guide took the group on a tour of the property after feeding the penguins in front of an enthused crowd. Guests can watch penguin feedings each morning promptly at 9:30.

Located at the resort, Japengo is an incredible sushi restaurant that received a Restaurant of the Year Award at the 2016 Aipono Maui Restaurant Awards. Maui CVB Director of Sales Randy Parker joined us there for breakfast to tell us about everything exciting that’s happening on the island and at Hyatt.

Lunch in the Palace Suite showed off the beautiful space connected to the meeting rooms, making it a perfect guest room for a CEO planning to host receptions before or after larger events. The resident Chef Jeff also had a chance to show off his culinary skills with a massive salade nicoise lunch.

Maui’s only oceanfront, 15,000 square-foot luxury spa and fitness center offer breathtaking views of the coastline. The spa hosted a dessert reception in the gorgeous ocean-facing relaxation lounge, where fruits and other treats were served fondue-style with champagne. As part of a new “Taste Makers” program to incorporate local flavors, glasses of champagne were topped off with delicious fruit mixes, courtesy of Maui Shrub Farm.

The family-friendly resort also boasts an elaborate water playground with tropical streams and waterfalls, two waterslides, an adults-only infinity pool, free-form pool, Grotto Bar and more.

Other amenities include championship golf, three tennis courts, SCUBA and water sports, four restaurants and lounges, shopping, and over 100,000 sq. f.t of indoor and outdoor function space.

It’s always wine o’ clock in Napa Valley! Northern California’s famous Wine Country is the perfect canvas for a picturesque event. Smart Meetings participated in this week’s Wine Country Hospitality and Event Trade Show, hosted by Concierge Alliance of Napa Valley and Sonoma (CANVAS). Here are nine things we did during our nine hours in Napa.

1. Rise & Shine

napa valley wine tasting

A continental breakfast was served in the tasting room at Liana Estates, the event’s home base. Liana is the combination of its two founders’ names, Peju sisters Lisa and Ariana. If Peju rings a bell, that’s because it’s their parents’ winery. The cork doesn’t fall far from the tree! The second-generation winemakers opened Liana in 2016.

2. Winery #1

Following breakfast, attendees boarded limousine buses provided by Napa Valley Wine Country Tours en route to Shadybrook Estate Winery. They have an expansive fleet of vehicles including a trolley, convertible Sprinter van and a Maybach!

Get ready to saddle up at this equestrian-esque vineyard. Open since May 2017, Shadybrook offers tastings and cooking demos in their tremendous kitchen. Outside, private events of up to about 125 attendees can be hosted on the terrace overlooking an edible garden. The patio area has a built-in bar, barbeques, corn hole and more.

Guests can pair wine tasting with horseback riding. They have a stable full of horses ready to take you on a trail through the vines. The on-site English Equestrian Center is currently receiving its final touches, but meeting professionals take note. Shadybrook will soon be getting dressage horses and an Olympic trainer for your entertainment pleasure.

3. Winery #2

napa valley wine tasting

Italics Winemakers is also relatively new to the area. We tasted a white and two red wines during our visit. This unique property features caves that were carved out using the same construction vehicle that makes subway tunnels. There’s a private dining room inside the cave with a beautiful chandelier above the table.

A military-looking Jeep took us up the hill to the on-site three-story newly renovated mansion. There are several large bedrooms for overnight stays, a kitchen with gorgeous views of Napa scenery, long dining table, spiral staircase leading up to a fitness room, pool table and more. Italics hosts bi-weekly pool parties at the estate during the summer. It’s free for event and hospitality industry professionals to attend, but they just ask you bring your own bottle and come prepared to swim if you want to take a dip. Before departing, Italics generously gave each visitor a complimentary bottle of wine.

4. Winery #3

Artesa Vineyards & Winery is no stranger to the wine biz. The family has been producing vino for over 400 years and is currently in its 17th generation!

Guests are greeted by large fountains as they enter Artesa. Once inside, you go downstairs to an underground cellar where the barrels are stored. This large space is available for events and musical performances. An outdoor courtyard is also a popular venue for all ages. There are two private dining rooms that are limited to guests who are over 21 years of age.

Artesa is known for food and wine pairings. CANVAS participants experienced “Taste of Artesa,” a sampling of finger foods and sparkling, white and red wines. Their rosé is also worth a sip… or glass.

5. Cocktail Hour

We returned to Liana Estates for a tented cocktail hour atop a hill. The tent was provided by Peak Productions Event Tent Rentals. Guests were greeted by living topiary (actors dressed as shrubs). Another showstopper was being served bubbly from the Champagne Gun. It looked like it was straight out of a James Bond film or music video. It cost nearly $500, but well worth the splurge for a memorable experience for your attendees.

CANVAS participants also noshed on pulled pork sliders from Cochon Volant BBQ and caviar from Black River Caviar.

6. Sit-Down Lunch

Then, we headed downhill for a multi-course sit-down luncheon catered by Alba @ The River Terrace Inn and Amiee D’Maris Events inside a barn. Floral arrangements by Bella Vita Event Productions hang from the ceiling like chandeliers in lieu of centerpieces.

A representative from a different winery was seated at each table. Smart Meetings was seated with Yao Family Wines, which is owned by retired NBA superstar Yao Ming. In his post-basketball days, he’s traded the court for the cork. Guests were encouraged to visit other tables to sample various wines.

7. Save Room for Dessert

The day of eating was not yet complete. The dessert tent included peach cobbler, wine-inspired sorbets from Cold Stone Creamery’s cart and assorted cookies from Annie the Baker. Guests looking for one final glass of vino enjoyed sipping on wine provided by Gloria Ferrer Caves & Vineyards. Directly behind the ice cream cart was an impressive cone made out of balloons by decorator Balloons By Design.

8. Food Truck Festival

“Food” trucks aren’t just for food anymore. Exit Reality, a virtual reality experience, parked in Liana’s lot. Once you board, put on the VR goggles and have the controllers in your hands, you are immersed in a different world whether it be under the sea or in outer space. Exit Reality is currently expanding their fleet of trucks to be available for more events and can also set up an indoor booth at an event. The VR experiences are pretty customizable and can be tailored to suit your brand, agenda or industry.

What’s Up Photos also set up shop. It is a photo booth that appears retro and vintage, but is actually very new. This trailer was built specifically for this purpose. Guests will enjoy taking fun snapshots and printing or sharing on social media on-the-spot.

After a day full of drinking, guests sobered up with a complimentary caffeinated beverage from OHM Coffee Roasters. Their truck is available for Napa Valley area events and their beans are available for purchase as gifts or by subscription. Off the Grid Catering can work with meeting professionals to coordinate a food truck festival for your next event.

9. Trade Show

Down a couple of steps in a sunken yard with a bocce ball court, the CANVAS trade show took place. Joining Smart Meetings, a wide assortment of vendors set up shop at tables.

Eyes were immediately drawn to a fairy-looking woman standing inside a table. She’s from a company called Circosphere that offers various event entertainment services such as cirque acts, fortune tellers and more.

Another stand-out special event experience is the Napa Valley Wine Train. It has been chugging down the rails since 1864. Cars or the entire locomotive can be chartered for private events.

Smart Meetings also met with some great Napa Valley venues, including Flamingo Conference Resort and Spa and sister properties Vintage Inn and Villagio Inn & Spa and a delicious new restaurant called Acacia House by Chris Cosentino, located at Las Alcobas luxury hotel.

Fall in love with the City by the Bay through its hotels, food, history, culture & theater

It’s not every day I get invited on a fam trip in my own backyard. The Smart Meetings office is located in beautiful Sausalito, on the north side of the Golden Gate Bridge. To embrace a car-less city weekend, I ditched my wheels at work and took a ferry across the Bay to Pier 41. San Francisco, known for its June Gloom of summer fog, was brilliant white under blue and sunny skies.

Meeting Flow

Hotel Zoe

Hotel Zoe, managed by Noble House Hotels & Resorts, is the newest property to swim in at Fisherman’s Wharf. We kicked things off Friday afternoon with a champagne toast in the 1,176-square-foot courtyard with its couches, firepits and a 26-foot-tall steel sculpture of Zoe. I stayed in one of the 221 guest rooms and was impressed with how well-lit it was and by the abundance of power and USB ports to keep my electronics charged.

On Saturday evening, we utilized some of Hotel Zoe’s more than 3,000 sq. ft. of meeting space for a dinner catered by its on-site Italian restaurant, Pescatore. There was a make-your-own pizza station with toppings to customize a pie. The chef slid them into the wood-burning oven, one of few in the city.

Argonaut Hotel

A few blocks away, and even closer to the water, is another Noble House property, Argonaut Hotel, where we had breakfast and a site tour on Saturday. This nautical-themed hotel houses 252 guest rooms, including 13 extravagant suites. The historic building, originally the Del Monte Cannery, has 8,850 sq. ft. of meeting space.

We did a quick walk-through of The San Francisco Maritime National Historical Park Museum’s Visitors Center, located inside Argonaut. This Smart Space features nautical exhibits and can be rented for a private function for only $1,500; a docent is included. Nearby, a fleet of historic vessels is the main attraction, as is the bayfront maritime museum itself.

Pump It Up

China Live

Escape from the Alcatraz of a meeting room for a fun night out in the hilly city. Hotel Zoe is within walking distance to North Beach (San Francisco’s version of Little Italy), Chinatown and Fisherman’s Wharf. We had an early bird dinner and tour at China Live, a restaurant and marketplace which aims to bring modern-day Shanghai to San Francisco. All three floors can be rented for private events, individually or as a buyout for up to 825 people. We dined on several of dishes, served family-style. My personal favorites were the shrimp-fried rice, chicken lettuce cups and crab spring rolls.

One of two lounge areas on the second floor, Cold Drinks Bar, is inspired by the film Blade Runner and can accommodate up to 50 people. A huge mirror becomes a television screen for videos or presentations. Large monitors can be wheeled into any of the other rooms for events.

Chef George Chen

We then met Chef George Chen, who was meticulously arranging beautiful porcelain dishes for his Nine Essential Flavors of Chinese Cuisine, served as part of the prix fixe menu at Eight Tables, an intimate space inside China Live. A special ninth “chef’s table” is located inside the immaculate kitchen.

The third floor contains a ballroom with a cork floor. A curtain divides the space and two screens descend from the ceiling for presentations. A group who did a buyout had Chinese acrobats on the top floor, a fortune teller on the second floor and another unique experience on the ground level. Groups often enjoy a dumpling-making activity.

With our stomachs full, we walked off our meal enroute to the world’s longest-running musical revue, Beach Blanket Babylon. At first, I was thinking, “What is this?” After a few skits, I came to enjoy the musical parody of politics, pop culture and religion. Oversized, elaborate headpieces worn by the performers are like nothing you’ve ever seen before.

The grand finale of the weekend was a Hornblower Cruises & Events sunset cruise from the Bay Bridge to the Golden Gate Bridge, with up-close views of Alcatraz Island. All passengers were given captain’s hats, so I snuck a photo at the wheel. Right on cue, a whale swam by! We saw spray spume from its blowhole, and its tale “waved” to us. Seeing this magnificent mammal in its natural environment was truly phenomenal, and I was reminded how spontaneous moments often make the most special memories.

Life is Like a Square of Chocolate

The first annual Ghirardelli Square Festival was taking place this same weekend. This bayside landmark has been around since 1862, but there are fun new eateries and activities to explore beyond the chocolate, milkshakes and ice cream sundaes. San Francisco Brewing Co. has communal picnic tables outside in the courtyard. The Cheese School, which opened this summer, offers team building, private classes and catering. Subpar Miniature Golf, a brand-new, indoor facility with windows overlooking the water, features holes that are miniaturized San Francisco landmarks. Buyouts and team building are available.

wyndham-tv

Wyndham Hotel Group has launched the hospitality industry’s first-ever branded TV sitcom. “Have Points, Will Travel”  is a reality-style mockumentary series that follows a young married couple as they travel down the west coast of the United States with just a backpack and one million Wyndham Rewards points.

Sitcom Plot

In the inaugural episode, blindfolded newlyweds Dean and Traci (played by Stephen Visocan and Rachel Adams) find themselves in a vineyard. They are cashless, but have one million Wyndham Rewards points at their disposal. They must use the points to complete a challenge that has them racing from one Wyndham destination to another. Along the way, they experience humorous adventures with a colorful cast of characters.

Dean and Traci are careful about how they spend their reward points, because they have been told that they will get to keep any points they haven’t used when the challenge ends. The underlying premise is to show viewers how easy it is to use Wyndham Rewards practically anywhere. Wyndham re-imagined its reward program in 2015, eliminating confusing categories. It offers simple, free-night redemptions with no blackout dates.

Watch In-Room or Online

Wyndham launched the innovative programming in February at 7,500 of its properties around the world. Wyndham Hotel Group brands include Dolce Hotels and Resorts, Wyndham Grand Hotels and Resorts, Wyndham Hotels and Resorts, Wyndham Garden Hotels, TRYP by Wyndham, Wingate by Wyndham, Hawthorn Suites by Wyndham, Microtel Inn & Suites by Wyndham, Ramada, Baymont Inn & Suites, Days Inn, Super 8, Howard Johnson, Travelodge and Knights Inn.

Guests can enjoy the free entertainment on the televisions in their guest rooms. Anyone can access the episodes on Wyndham Rewards’ YouTube channel.

As prnewswire.com reports, “Have Points, Will Travel” puts a new spin on traditionally boring in-room hotel entertainment. “Most people tune it out or click it off,” says Noah Brodsky, senior vice president of worldwide loyalty and engagement at Wyndham Hotel Group. “Talk about a missed opportunity. At Wyndham, we have hundreds of thousands of guests staying at our hotels each and every night. That’s hundreds of thousands of opportunities to connect on a daily basis in a way that’s not only fun and fresh, but that keeps us top of mind when they travel.

“Great brands don’t just put out ads, they speak to their customers in ways that are memorable and that resonate. Great brands are creative, take chances and add value,” Brodsky adds.

The production values of “Have Points, Will Travel” are high. The first episode was directed by accomplished filmmaker Josh Miller and produced by CY&N, the production arm of a leading creative agency based in New York City.

Disney's Grand Californian Hotel & Spa

After a long day of meetings and riding the rides, you and your guests can get a good night’s sleep in the newly remodeled rooms at Disney’s Grand Californian Hotel & Spa. As part of Disney’s green initiative, the rooms have energy-efficient LED lights, recycling bins and a thermostat that only kicks on when the temperature goes three degrees above your preferred temperature.

Other features include raised beds to store luggage underneath, a couch that converts into an extra bed, updated bathrooms, Kuerig coffee pots with to-go cups and plenty of power and USB outlets to stay fully charged. All the rooms will have these upgrades by the end of 2017.

The Grand Californian Hotel also has 20,000 sq. ft. of meeting space, a dedicated conference center and a 12,000-square-foot ballroom. The resort includes just over 950 guest rooms to support large and small events.

Disneyland is actually home to three hotels, each of which offer conference space. Disney’s Paradise Pier Hotel includes 20,000 sq. ft. of meeting space and just over 460 guest rooms. Disneyland Hotel, the largest convention hotel, features 136,000 sq. ft. of space and just over 990 guest rooms. Plus, the event lawn space is being enhanced for more year-round activities. “Disneyland Hotel is classically Disney,” says Robert Donahue, director of resort sales and service for Disneyland Resort and Aulani, A Disney Resort & Spa.

Getting Around

Donahue promotes Disneyland resorts as being within easy walking distance. “We like to call it a walkable destination,” Donahue says. “Our three hotels are clustered really close together, which are then flowing out to the Downtown Disney District…our dining, shopping and retail and entertainment area. And then you walk right through Downtown Disney into our main esplanade and depending on your direction, you can [go] left to Disneyland Park or right to California Adventure Park.”

We talked to Donahue about the best ways to get from here to meeting. He had these three insider tips.

  • Wear comfortable shoes. There is a lot of walking. Consider initiating a fitness challenge amongst attendees to track who gets the most steps.
  • Meeting goers who live outside driving distance can easily travel to Anaheim by air. John Wayne Airport (SNA) in Orange County is under a half hour drive. Long Beach Airport (LGB), Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) and Ontario International Airport (ONT) are also convenient.
  • For those who prefer train travel, Anaheim Regional Transportation Intermodal Center (ARTIC), next to Honda Center in Anaheim, is 10 minutes from the resort property. It is served by Amtrak and Surfliner.

Since Banksy began spraying socially-conscious messages around the world, people have started to recognize graffiti as a legitimate artistic medium. Street art often depicts the mindset of a particular culture and can enhance drab urban walls with vibrant colors. Remarkable works can be found abundantly in cities throughout the country. Yet in order to achieve high status as a graffiti artist, you need to offer something extra. Only some displays are worth making a trip. We included a few guided tours to make planning this outing a little easier.

1. New York City

Every New York City borough offers its own flavor. Their distinct characters are definitely embodied in the wide range of graffiti art. From Brooklyn student murals to colorful 80s tags, it’s all one-of-a-kind.

Must see areas: Bowery Mural, Welling Court, Johnson Avenue, Bronx Wall of Fame and 100 Gates Project

Top tour: Graff Tours NYC (Bushwick, Brooklyn)

2. Los Angeles

Los Angeles is world-acclaimed for its street art. Just browse Instagram—the proof is in the pinning. Murals, mosaics and collages provide a diverse mix.

Must see areas:  Venice Art Walls, Art District, Murphy Ranch, Echo Park and Downtown

Top tour: LA Art Tours (Art District)

3. Miami

Miami’s graffiti has plenty of aesthetic appeal. However, many of the pieces are also acts of visual political and social commentary.

Must see areas: Wynwood Arts District, Domino Plaza and Little Havana

Top tour: Miami’s Best Graffiti guide by Wynwood

4. San Francisco

San Francisco’s graffiti scene dates back in the 1930s when Diego Rivera imprinted his first piece outside of Mexico. The movement continues to thrive with an emphasis on multicultural public art.

Must see areas: Haight (upper and lower), Tenderloin, Mission District and SOMA (South of Market Area)

Top tour: Art Primo SF (Tenderloin)

5. Honolulu

Just as Hawaii’s culture has a strong identity, the graffiti art demonstrates its independence. Additionally, each year a street art festival called POW! WOW! celebrates this art form.

Must see areas: Cooke Street, Auahi Street and Lana Lane, Mother Waldron Park and Pohukaina Street

Top tour: Paradise Pedals (Kaka’ako)

6. Philadelphia

Rather than fighting the graffiti problem, Philadelphia decided to start making opportunities for large-scale murals. They even have The Mural Arts Program (MAP), which hires graffiti artists who have been arrested in the past.

Must see areas: Spring Arts District, Graffiti Underground, Olde Kensington and Chinatown

Top tour: Mural Mile (north and south of Market Street)

7. Atlanta

Atlanta hosts the annual street art conference Living Walls, the City Speaks. But that is only one of many reasons people are speculating whether Atlanta will be the next major street art city.

Must see areas: King Street Tunnel, Atlanta BeltLine, Cabbagetown, Edgewood Avenue and East Atlanta Village

Top tour: Atlanta Street Art Tours (begins at Edgewood Avenue)

Convention CentersConvention centers are as varied as meeting planners, attendees and hospitality providers. Much more advanced and cool than the boxes of yesteryear, today’s convention centers are Wi-Fi-empowered, green from the inside out and a dynamic stage for the exchange of ideas.

Find out which convention center you are by taking the Smart Meetings quiz. To learn more about convention centers see the March issue of Smart Meetings magazine.
