Main stage legacy energy
When I attended the 37th annual Meeting Professionals International European Meetings & Events Conference (MPI EMEC) in Barcelona, Spain, in February, I was awestruck by a city that embraces its strategic role in 2,000 years of Mediterranean history. The cobblestone streets of the Gothic Quarter originated as a Roman walled city before playing starring roles in the Industrial Revolution and the Modernisme movement led by its most famous resident, Antoni Gaudí.
Today, the capital of Catalonia is an innovation hub, blending elaborate historic architecture and a thriving sustainable energy, regenerative design and emerging technology hub alongside a vibrant sports culture in the living monuments where the 1992 Olympics thrust the city onto the international travel stage.
A Warm Destination
Despite rumblings that the destination is too popular, Barcelona Convention Bureau Business Events Manager Noemí Rosell explained that business groups are welcomed with open arms. She suggested exploring all the region has to offer beyond Basilica de la Sagrada Familia in the Eixample district, although that is spectacular, especially now that the crowning ceramic cross is in place.
Tours include art, history and creativity at Antoni Gaudí’s Casa Bellesguard, along with trips to Barcelona Marina. This is first and foremost a port city with all the bustle that five million people and a thriving industry bring. The Port of Barcelona is a BlueTechPort focused on the blue economy while also welcoming 2.8 million cruise passengers each year.
An investment in media, biomedical, energy and design in the 22@Barcelona district is fueling innovation and housing in the center of the urban grid. The top of 38-story Torre Glories houses an event space and viewing deck where groups can see where architectural reuse, public space and history converge to influence creativity, collaboration and attendee experience.
Alta Alella Winery is a 15-mile train ride from the city center. This Mediterranean vineyard operation connects leadership, sustainability and sense of place in the Cava Capital.
Signature Stays

Sustainability was an intentional focus everywhere I traveled. Artsy, edgy SLS Barcelona opened in 2024 with 470 guest rooms featuring private terraces overlooking Marina Port Forum Harbour. It is LEED Gold and energized with solar power, waste reduction and recycling programs.
Innovation is also center stage at Casino Barcelona in the former Olympic Village steps from the beach action, where virtual reality experiences are always on the agenda at LET Room. Racing simulators, a VR escape room and unique event spaces pair with creative cocktails. Hotel Arts Barcelona anchors De la Marina with the largest ballroom and 483 guest rooms.
Also prominent on the horizon is W Barcelona (aka Hotel Vela or Sail Hotel) in La Barceloneta. It boasts 473 guest rooms, a signature rooftop bar and an Extreme Wow Suite that is scheduled to come back online this month with the completion of the first phase of a major renovation.
