Americans Using Vacation Days

The state of America is drowsy. Nearly half of Americans are using paid time off for things unrelated to vacation such as catching up on sleep and running errands, according to a report from global cruise line Princess Cruises. Out of 1,003 adults surveyed last month by Wakefield Research, 72 percent take at least one day off per year just to sleep, while two out of five people take five or more days off per year (a full work week).

Aside from sleep, 68 percent admitted to using vacation days for other non-relaxing activities: 37 percent took time off for family emergencies; 36 percent used vacation time for doctor’s appointments; 13 percent used days to take care of sick family members; and 23 percent took time off to complete household errands and projects.

To compound the stress of taking time off, some Americans experience guilt for using vacation days. Forty-three percent admitted to frequently feeling bad for relaxing. More than a third of working participants, including half of millennials, often feel more stressed during vacations because they are unable to stop thinking about work. The lack of sleep is even getting in the way of leisure activities— nearly half of respondents, including 65 percent of millennials, said they frequently skip events or activities on vacation because they’re simply too tired.

Stress by Region

Stress levels are high on vacation in every region except one. Workers in the Northeast (43 percent), West (42 percent) and South (33 percent) are significantly more likely to feel more stressed on vacation because they can’t stop thinking about work, compared to those surveyed in the Midwest (21 percent). Sixty-seven percent of Midwesterners agreed they hardly ever feel guilty about relaxing, compared to an average of only 54 percent across other regions.

Stress by Gender

When it comes to differences between the sexes, women are more likely (48 percent) than men (39 percent) to feel guilty about taking time to relax. However, among participants who took at least one day off per year to catch up on sleep, men took more days than women—eight versus seven, on average.

oakland trending meetings destination

Just a couple of years ago, Oakland was struggling to achieve recognition as a viable meetings destination, but it’s suddenly emerged as arguably the hottest spot in the Bay Area and one of the most intriguing in the nation.

Cultivating an edgy, hip identity and featuring much-improved meeting options, the city is on track to book 120 conventions this year, a 23 percent hike from 2015. This represents a huge increase even compared with last year, when conventions rose from 94 to 97 and a record-breaking 2.6 million overnight stays accounted for $1.6 billion.

The total hotel tax collected this fiscal year in Oakland is expected to rise 11 percent, to more than $23 million, supporting 94,000 tourism-related jobs.

Several hotel projects have been proposed for the city, and in the meantime alternative meeting spaces in office buildings and even an abandoned train station are being used to supplement Oakland’s offerings, which include Oakland Marriott City Center, with more than 90,000 sq. ft. of meeting space; Oakland Convention Center, with 64,000 sq. ft.; Hilton Oakland Airport, with 16,000 sq. ft.; Claremont Club and Spa, with 24,800 sq. ft., and Waterfront Hotel in Jack London Square, with some 8,000 sq. ft.

Gatherings are also held in restaurants and theme parks, among other locations.

Oakland is primed to become an even more attractive alternative to San Francisco, with its great demand for meeting spaces and ultra-expensive room rates—the average hotel room rate in 2015 was $397 in San Francisco, compared with $144 in Oakland.

Also, Oakland is benefiting from the closure of a large portion of San Francisco’s Moscone Center during a two-year, $500 million expansion project. Some 42 percent of space will be added to the facility, which offers 1 million sq. ft. of event space, but in the meantime up to 1 million attendees will need to meet elsewhere.

Expedia is joining forces with disruption technology with the launch of Expedia Labs, a new website dedicated to experimental tech and travel concepts built within the online travel agency and through company partnerships. Designed to give developers a dedicated platform to test and expose new travel ideas and technology, Expedia Labs provides travelers a portal to experiment with the latest trip planning tools and applications before new features may become available on Expedia’s sites and apps.

Last week Expedia hosted its first Travel Think Tank hackathon at its offices in San Francisco, demonstrating the company’s dedication to tech openness and industry collaboration. The event aimed to increase the number of travel projects currently featured on Expedia Labs, and cultivated relationships with partners who seek to improve the future of travel through technology. Developer teams presented mobile concepts to a panel of experts and influential industry executives, including Dara Khosrowshahi, CEO of Expedia.

“We are constantly exploring new ways to engage with developers to solve great travel questions,” said Tony Donohoe, chief technology officer of Expedia. “Expedia Labs and Travel Think Tank are a direct reflection of how the company will continue to create new opportunities – both online and offline – for partners to share and test their latest travel apps and learn through direct feedback from Expedia executives and engineers, as well as our massive audience of customers and travelers around the world.”

Several travel-related projects are already showcased on Expedia Labs, and can be explored and tested. Based on user feedback, Expedia will focus on identifying concepts travelers find worthwhile. So far, there are eight applications available:

-ExpediaThis – An application that uses Twitter to analyze inspirational images and provide users with the location of the image submitted and relevant Expedia content to facilitate travel planning.

-Meet in the Middle – A group travel planning solution that allows users to input multiple origins to find common destinations sorted by the lowest total cost.

-Triplane – A tool that helps individuals and groups collect and organize travel inspirations into an itinerary by enabling users to collaborate and add activities from across the Internet to create the perfect vacation.

-Treasure Island—A map that contains everything necessary to plan a trip in one place. This includes lists of hotels, things to do, attractions and places to eat and drink. Users can also search Yelp recommendations and get results on one single map view.

-Expedia Facebook Bot—By analyzing information provided in Facebook Messenger, a bot gathers details and comes up with relevant hotel options.  It can also send booking confirmations for conversations started on the messenger app.

-Expedia Cruise Compare—Cruise results are compared along various data points including prices, number of nights, price per night and departure date. An extended list of filters such as price ranges, destination ports and amenities can further narrow down search results based on individual preferences.

-SwipeSmart—This app simplifies the hotel shopping experience on mobile devices by bringing images to the forefront and providing an intuitive way to quickly brows and explore available hotels.

-HotelExplorer—Based on the most important search factors—price and hotel ratings—the booking process is further simplified by requiring only pertinent information and filtering results without bias.

-In-App Mega Cruise Booking—With quality graphics and succinct information, customers can learn about passenger ships within a mobile-booking experience before booking their next cruise.

LNG-18-perth-australia-how-to-plan-a-great-event

From April 11 to 15, more than 8,000 professionals and leaders in liquefied natural gas (LNG) met in Perth, Australia, for the 18th International Conference & Exhibition on Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG 18). The conference, which was held at Perth Convention and Exhibition Centre (PCEC), was attended by the current prime minister of Australia, Malcolm Turnbull, and other influential public sector leaders.

LNG 18 claimed an impressive lineup of industry leaders as speakers, including CEOs from major corporations such as Shell and Chevron. The conference also boasted amazing food and beverage, entertainment and experiences, including offsite technical tours to Australia’s largest oil and gas development, gourmet Australian cuisine and photo opportunities with a koala or baby kangaroo.

In spite of a few challenges, the exhibition was a smashing success. Attendees praised the venue’s modern design, the freshness of the food and the quality of the speakers and entertainment. Here are a few of the ways organizers Arinex and Exhibitions and Trade Fairs made LNG 18 great.

LNG 18 kicked things off with a powerful start that made a lasting impression—an elegant evening welcome reception, traditional smoking ceremony and an inspiring speech from Prime Minister Turnbull.
To create enough space for the event, organizers transformed a parking lot into a beautiful, seated dining area that included an atrium, a series of food stations and a temporary kitchen.
To broaden the event’s reach around the globe, Arinex marketed LNG 18 at major LNG events in the United States, Russia and France.
PCEC hosted 160 exhibitors from 30 countries in a 124,000-square-foot area, creating an intimate and easy-to-navigate exhibition space.
The program included three networking events and three “Thought Leadership Lunches,” which gave attendees the opportunity to connect with visionaries such as the Australian foreign minister, Julie Bishop.

Local adventures are in the eyes of the adventurers. To some, a walk through a stunning garden is an adventure, while others may prefer surfing in the Pacific Ocean.

With more and more business travelers arriving a day early or sticking around a little longer to experience a slice of local adventure, meeting hotels and resorts are armed with options for every occasion. This includes team building during conferences through activities that are part of the very fabric of each destination.

The 375-room luxury resort offers 13,000 sq. ft. of event space, including a 9,000-square-foot ballroom.

naples-grande-view

The winding, 3,168-foot pathway from Naples Grande Beach Resort to the Gulf of Mexico is an excursion unto itself. One of the top meeting resorts in Florida’s Paradise Coast, Naples Grande sits back a tad from the beachfront, but makes sure its guests have access to the Gulf by offering a shuttle that weaves through a mangrove forest. It’s just one of the amenities attendees will enjoy if you meet here.

At the end of the path, the mangroves give way to a white-sand beach that stretches endlessly in both directions. With the calm, warm water of the gulf gently kissing the shoreline, it’s a very safe option for swimming—and all water sports—especially compared to Florida’s meeting giants across the state on the Atlantic Ocean.

But for those who prefer pools, Naples Grande has three of them. There’s a large family pool with a slide, an adjacent adult-only pool and a lap pool just off the tennis complex, which sports 15 clay courts. Just want to relax? Enjoy a treatment at The Spa at Naples Grande, which was recently renovated. Naples Grande even has its own private golf course, located about 15 minutes from the resort. It’s only open to hotel guests and local members. The new clubhouse makes a great one-two punch for a golf outing followed by a reception, creating an offsite that is very easy to coordinate.

What is Paradise Coast?

There’s so much to do at Naples Grande that a visit to the resort will give any first-time guest to Southwest Florida a vivid experience emblematic of the Paradise Coast. Naples is the key meeting city in Collier County, which has been dubbed Florida’s Paradise Coast by the local convention and visitors bureau. The county also includes Marco Island and Everglades City, and the CVB promotes all three cities.

Most visitors to Naples will be flying through Southwest Florida International Airport (RSW) in Fort Myers, about a 30-minute drive to Naples Grande. (Fort Myers is the meetings hub for neighboring Lee County.) RSW currently offers direct international flights to and from Dusseldorf, Germany; Toronto, Montreal and Ottawa, Canada; San Juan, Puerto Rico; Nassau, Bahamas; and Cancun, Mexico. The airport provides nonstop service to 45 destinations on 14 air carriers.

Kayaking in Paradise

holly woolard kayaking

Back to the beach, which is one of the things Naples Grande and Paradise Coast is known for. During a recent visit, I took the shuttle down to the beach, where I went kayaking. The resort rents single and double kayaks, with the ability to accommodate around 15 people at a time. It’s not uncommon for groups to rent out the entire supply and take turns kayaking, once again taking full advantage of the calm waters and incredible scenic waterways that separate the resort from the Gulf.

During my paddle, I saw herons, egrets, ibis and pelicans. Two anglers getting around on pedal-powered kayaks cast out nets to haul in bait. As one man removed the bait fish from his net, an elegant, bold heron walked right up to him and took a small fish from his hand. It was an amazing sight and reminded me of the paradise that surrounded me.

After I kayaked, I relaxed beachside at the Naples Grande cafe called Rhode’s End. Sipping on a pina colada, a tradition I usually reserve for vacation, I chatted with a Naples local and asked where he takes his out-of-town guests. He smiled and said “right here.” Not only is the beach virtually private due to its isolation, but it offers a magnificent setting to experience the colorful sunset and have a cocktail; food is also served.

Meeting & Event Details

Besides its recreation opportunities, Naples Grande offers 474 guest rooms in its main, 18-floor tower and 50 villas, which feature a bedroom area and living room.

Most indoor meeting space is conveniently positioned on the resort’s second floor, creating a contained area for groups to easily move from general sessions to breakouts. In total, there is 83,000 sq. ft. of indoor and outdoor meeting and event space, including a 14,442-square-foot ballroom, one of the largest in Collier County. The 5,802-square-foot ground-level ballroom opens up to the terrace, creating great flow for receptions.

The ground level is open and inviting, with a lobby bar and restaurant that are conducive for networking. It’s totally easy to meet on the second floor and continue the conversations with a cocktail at the oblong bar or on the terrace or at the pool just beyond the terrace.

Florida’s Paradise Coast is just that—a slice of paradise. And Naples Grande Beach Resort is doing its part to help build and uphold that reputation.

bad hotel etiquette

Inattentive parents, hallway hell-raisers and in-room revelers top the list of hotel etiquette behaviors that irritate hotel guests, according to a recent study.

This was among the many findings in the 2016 Expedia Hotel Etiquette study, which is based on a survey of 1,018 Americans who stayed in a hotel at least once in the past two years. The study focused on the features and amenities that Americans prioritize when booking a hotel, as well as behaviors that they find most aggravating.

Seventy-two percent of those surveyed said that they are irritated by inattentive parents, followed by hallway hell-raisers (69 percent), in-room revelers (59 percent), complainers (53 percent), bickerers (35 percent), the loudly amorous (29 percent), poolside partiers (28 percent), hot tub canoodlers (22 percent), business bar boozers (17 percent) and elevator chatterboxes (9 percent).

In terms of their own temptations to misbehave, 24 percent admit to taking hotel toiletries home with them, 11 percent have let multiple people sleep in their room without notifying the hotel and 10 percent have taken items from their room without permission.

Americans are divided on tipping. Among those who tip, the most-tipped hotel employees are the housekeeper (46 percent), followed by the room service attendant (40 percent). Others receiving tips are the valet (30 percent) porter (20 percent) and concierge (10 percent). Thirty percent of participants said they don’t tip anyone.

Price was identified by 73 percent of respondents as “very important” when booking a hotel, followed by complimentary Wi-Fi (63 percent), location (61 percent), reviews (43 percent) and parking options (38 percent). Perhaps surprising to many, ability to earn hotel rewards points and the hotel brand itself were considered very important by only 20 percent and 18 percent of participants, respectively.

Wi-Fi was also selected by 88 percent of respondents as a “very/somewhat important” hotel amenity, and 97 percent think that it should be provided at no charge. Rounding out the top four are an in-room fridge (81 percent), complimentary toiletries (80 percent) and a pool (59 percent).

Expedia commissioned the hotel etiquette study and it was executed by GfK, an independent global market research company.
