Liana Acevedo, CMP

Director of Destination Services, Visit Richmond VA

Immersive, Authentic, Meaningful

Moment I Knew I Belonged in the Meetings Industry: There are a few different moments that come to mind when I reflect on the feeling of belonging in this industry. One moment I think about is the first large convention I ever had the opportunity to assist with servicing. It was an international, religious event that involved heavy transportation coordination, translation and accessibility services, and on-site destination services support. From the pre-planning meetings to the pre-con, to witnessing the event live in action, I remember feeling excited and proud to be part of a citywide event such as this. In addition to that experience, there’s one more that vividly stands out to me and that is my first-time experience attending the Events Services Professional Association Annual Conference. That was the first time I think I truly realized the value of destination services in the event planning process, and I met so many peers across the country that could relate to the work that I do and that is when I truly found what I like to call, My Tribe.

Welcoming Strategy: I create space for open communication and collaboration. I value partnerships and whether I am working on an internal project with my team, with a client on an upcoming event, or even figuring out what the family is having for dinner–I ensure the people around me know that we are in this Together. I welcome differing perspectives, new ideas, and I am always down for experimentation! Ultimately, my goal is always to create a safe space that reflects respect & trust. I find that can be achieved through open communication and collaboration.

Next Goal: Short-term, my goal is to revamp the Richmond Region’s destination services offerings and re-introduce ourselves to meeting and event professionals. Mid-term, I am aiming to develop more meaningful relationships with local community-driven organizations to help create a path for them to tap into the tourism supply chain. Long-term, I am planning to take on another industry certification that will both challenge me and enhance my overall skillset. It’s an ambitious list but I’m looking forward to the journey in bringing this vision to fruition!

Creativity, Inclusivity, Innovation

Moment I Knew I Belonged in the Meetings Industry: My sense of belonging in the events industry solidified after completing my first major event. My team and I successfully transformed a blank canvas into a remarkable experience. The journey from idea to reality was both fulfilling and defining. After the successful completion, I was eager to embark on the journey again, and from that point forward, my passion for the events industry was ignited!

Welcoming Strategy: I enjoy creating environments where everyone can be their authentic selves. This means valuing everyone’s perspectives and individual differences that make them unique. I welcome open communication with my team and encourage team members to contribute and share their ideas. During events and in life, I love building new relationships. I meet people with kindness, empathy, and positivity. Even a simple smile and a “hello” aid me in fostering a welcoming atmosphere. Ultimately, I always try to prioritize inclusivity.

Next Goal: My next goal is to begin working on dreams deferred. It’s time to dust off those shelved ideas and dive in headfirst. Additionally, I’d like to explore advocacy work, both locally and nationally.

Emma Allen, ELI Advanced Event Design & Strategy Certification

Event Designer, LEO Events

Curiosity, Optimism, Collaboration

Moment I Knew I Belonged in the Meetings Industry: A few years ago, I was the production coordinator for a music festival. It was the first time I was involved with a project from the very first kick off call to loading out the event site. My involvement extended across all departments, allowing me to see the ins and outs of what it takes to produce a large public event. On the last night I was standing backstage looking out at the crowd during the headliner’s final set. Seeing thousands of people creating core memories and singing their favorite songs, from that perspective, was a powerful and tangible feeling. Witnessing firsthand the magic that our events create, and the relentless dedication invested by our team to make it happen–that’s when I knew I wanted to recreate that feeling for others, again and again.

Welcoming Strategy: Working in a high stress, fast-paced industry, it’s easy to have tunnel vision and just “get the job done.” However, building strong relationships is what makes the job more meaningful. I like to get to know people on the human level, let’s talk about your pets, your travels, your hobbies! When you get to know others on a personal level, you gain a sense of trust that wasn’t there before. Also, whether it’s with clients, friends, or vendors, I always treat every individual with equal respect and lead with compassion and empathy. I always want to offer an inclusive environment where diverse perspectives are valued, concerns are heard and collaboration is encouraged.

Next Goal: The event designer role is still relatively new within my company which means there is so much potential for growth! My long-term goal is to assist in the expansion of the Event Design branch of our creative department and manage a small team of event designers. To prepare, the next goal I am working towards is pursuing leadership training and managerial courses to become a more effective manager and mentor for those who share the same passion for events and design.

Danielle Boling

Events & Communications Manager, The Collective Genius

Elite Customer Experience

Moment I Knew I Belonged in the Meetings Industry: I was hired for an administrative role in late 2020 and was instantly hooked after my first event.  When I was offered the position of event manager in 2021, it felt like a very natural fit. With a background in social work, I’ve consistently found fulfillment in helping others. My enjoyment extends to creating structure and implementing efficient processes. Event planning serves as the perfect platform to integrate these strengths, guaranteeing a seamless execution that places customer experience at the forefront. This dynamic combination enables me to orchestrate events with precision, ensuring not only organizational excellence but also a heightened focus on customer satisfaction.

Welcoming Strategy: In order to prioritize a welcoming environment, my interactions are guided by thoughtfulness and empathy, extending to the team, vendors and customers. Wearing a consistent smile, I aim to foster a positive and steady atmosphere. I am actively seeking feedback from my superiors to ensure ongoing improvement, while by valuing my coworkers’ input, I actively seek their buy-in and ideas, fostering collaboration. This approach transcends the team, extending to events and daily life, ensuring everyone feels heard, valued and welcomed.

Next Goal: In 2024, while remaining in my current role, I am committed to enhancing the customer experience through high-caliber event spaces, exceptional customer service and impactful content. My initiatives for the year revolve around anticipating and meeting the needs of our customers. This involves optimizing the registration process, establishing open and responsive communication channels, maintaining real-time and accurate member data, and fostering connections crucial for assisting our customers in scaling their real estate investing businesses.

Michael Ann Bross

Producer, Walmart

Educate, Engage, Motivate

Moment I Knew I Belonged in the Meetings Industry: I still get emotional when I think about my first assignment as lead producer on our largest event, shareholders. I felt valued, humbled and trusted. To lead a large team was no small feat. I brought calmness, organization and transparency every step of the way and together we pulled off a successful event. To see the audience surprised and delighted as the content came to life was the most rewarding experience. This moment is where I became captivated and realized this was where I belonged, this is where I thrive and this is where I can truly make a difference.

Welcoming Strategy: I take pride in treating people how they deserve to be treated, with kindness, empathy and respect. I learned early on that intently listening to others goes a long way. I have learned so much by practicing this, but I have also found that it gives the other person a sense of trust in you, and more importantly, they thrive when they know they are heard. I am also keen on transparency with the teams I work with. Sharing knowledge and instilling confidence in each of them so that they can succeed is my brand; this is who I am.

Next Goal: My short-term goal is to continue to find ways to bring innovation and digital technology to my events. I dialed in heavily to this in 2023 by eliminating print and bringing digital to life through digital signage, using event apps more efficiently and effectively and finding ways to be more interactive with our attendees through their personal devices. This starts from the moment we send a save-the-date and extends until the attendees depart. My long-term goal is to continue to develop personally and professionally, as I would one day like to own my own events company, from stem to stern.

Rachel Collins

Hospitality & Engagement Specialist, Atlantic Union Bank

Rightsized, Indelible, Experiential

Moment I Knew I Belonged in the Meetings Industry: A former manager dubbed me a “corporate fairy godmother,” and I felt I had found my calling. I aspire to create environments that remove obstacles and let the work happen. Guests at events I’ve produced shouldn’t need to think about the logistics, simply their defined goals for the meeting. The fulfillment I get from my purpose is most prevalent on arduous days. I pride myself in being a firefighter, both proactively and reactively, with the poise and discernment that prevents guests from even knowing there’s smoke or a flame.

Welcoming Strategy: I design with the end in mind, considering all possible touchpoints for surprise and delight as well as potential impediments. Regardless of how corporate a structured a meeting may be, I effectively challenge my customers to add dashes of charm and warm hospitality. The vision statement for my role at the bank is “everyone has the best seat at our table,” and I revel in guests feeling as if they are coming to my home, not a meeting. The outcomes may be tactical and corporate, but the experience is about strategically eliciting emotions that make progress happen.

Next Goal: I will complete my CMP certification and am actively dedicating 10% of my time to professional growth. Since I am building the corporate events function at the bank from scratch, as a team of one, I’m also focused on expanding self-service resources and services across the bank that can elevate events and maintain consistent brand interactions even for projects I can’t engage in. Lastly, I want to continue to deepen my relationships across the industry, identify and work with a mentor and build a network of caring professionals who support one another through the personal and professional challenges of #eventlife.

Lauren Giglioli

National Sales Manager, MGM Resorts International

Listen, Connection, WOW

Moment I Knew I Belonged in the Meetings Industry: 2021, we were working around the variants and can agree it was not a “normal” year just yet. Quick visit to the D.C. area to see a client who had recently started her own housing agency. Fast forward to 2024, we were lucky enough to showcase our hotel to her and her team. Because of the relationship I built with the client, green wigs at dinner was a no brainer. Low and behold, when the green wigs were revealed, in unison they roared with laughter! I knew in that moment, listening to my intuition to create a specific WOW experience would have them never forget our green machine of a hotel and the team that made them laugh all night. When in doubt, buy the green wig!

Welcoming Strategy: I learned a long time ago, treat others the way you want to be treated. And most recently changed that mindset to treat others the way they want to be treated. In the office, I want everyone included and do my best to include everyone. This comes in the form of offering mentorship, open door policy, and guidance when asked. Smiling is one thing you will always see me doing regardless of the morning my kids may have given me before heading into the office. I want everyone around me to know they are heard and have a sense of comfortability. #TeamNewFriends

Next Goal: The next goal I am pursuing is to become an Associate Director of Sales. I am continuing to work on mentoring colleagues, speaking up more when I have the opportunity, and sharing feedback when it’s needed. Building my brand over the last 9 years in sales has allowed me to have my clients trust me during contracting to the end of their event, to allow team members to confide in me when necessary, and to have leadership confident in my decision making. 2024 will be another testament to why I love when I do, capture new business for MGM Grand, and continue building my brand.

Samantha Goldberg

Senior Catering Sales Manager, Hilton West Palm Beach

Reimagine, Inspire, Collaborate

Moment I Knew I Belonged in the Meetings Industry: In high school, I used to help my friend’s mother with her private chef business. We planned, prepared and executed special occasions everywhere from local businesses to mansions on the island of Palm Beach. This is when I fell in love with the world of events. I was able to build rapport with many diverse personalities. This passion was confirmed while continuing my formal education with a focus in hospitality management at Florida State University’s Dedman School of Hospitality.

Welcoming Strategy: The key to making everyone feel welcome, whether colleague, event attendee or in life starts with a genuine smile, warm greeting and open mind. In events and life, I carry myself with a sense of authority while remaining approachable. There is a lot to be said for the old saying “you get more bees with honey than vinegar” and the golden rule “treat others how you wish to be treated.”

Next Goal: My current goals include, but are not limited to, establishing meaningful relationships to drive measurable outcomes with partners in the community. I also strongly believe in elevating the standards of our industry no matter the size of the piece of business. I am passionate about providing the highest level of service and maintaining exposure to the latest in event trends and technology. Having secured Non Profits Night Out annual event for 2023, has ignited my drive to partner and introduce national nonprofits to the Palm Beach County community.

Mackenzie Kahl

Director of Catering & Events, Crown Block & The Crown Room

Innovative, Immersive, Memorable.

Moment I Knew I Belonged in the Meetings Industry: In my sophomore year of college, I really struggled with math and an “advisor” pulled me into her office and said I would have better luck working in Parks and Recreation than high-end events because of one math class. My fierce defiance worked to my benefit that one time! I immediately left that school and returned to UNLV to complete my studies and receive the most highly regarded degree in hospitality with an emphasis in Meetings & Events in the United States. Always a #Rebel

Welcoming Strategy: Great food and environment, of course!  But there is more to it than that–there is a phrase my mother always used around me growing up: it is to make a “hiddur mitzvah.” It stuck with me. It means to take time and purposeful effort to create the most beautiful ceremonial objects, including the food, decor, sounds, smells, etc. when greeting people. In doing this we create deep human connection as we share the experience, we feel seen,  loved, and a sense of belonging. This is warmth. This is welcoming. This is what people actually remember. I know I do.

Next Goal: My next business goal is to receive my CMP certification. My next personal goal is to get on the board or committee of a non-profit based in Dallas and contribute as a volunteer leadership role. I love both the event planning and the fundraising aspects of layman leadership.

Allison Kusic Grady

Senior Director, Catering Sales, Wolfgang Puck Catering

Memorable, Engaging, Meticulous

Moment I Knew I Belonged in the Meetings Industry: In high school, I was a hostess at a Mexican Restaurant in a New Jersey  mall. I remember one incredibly busy weekend night during the holiday season with a palatable “buzz” in the air. I recall walking into the kitchen to grab chips and salsa for a server, who I just double sat, and everyone was smiling, laughing, shouting out orders and seemed to genuinely be enjoying themselves…at work! I recall pushing the kitchen doors wide open back to the dining room and saw the same thing at the bar and side stations and thought “this is it!”

Welcoming Strategy: My intention when engaging with family, friends, employees, new people, clients, etc. is to anticipate their needs as best possible and to learn about who they are through engaging conversation and active listening. For example, when you have weekend house guests, and you have their favorite creamer or morning beverage, it makes them feel at home. When someone feels “at home” they feel comfortable, loved, safe and cared for. I attempt to visualize myself through their experience and make decisions from their standpoint which makes people feel understood and important.

Next Goal: Leadership and Community Service are the two main focuses of my life. There is nothing more wonderful than seeing a direct report grow in their knowledge foundation and navigate a challenging situation with grace and confidence. The light of supporting your community and seeing the smile on someone’s face when they receive an act of service–nothing compares. I want to continue to work on becoming a better version of me, so that in turn I can help others grow.

Maggie McDonald, CMP

Event & Conference Consultant, MassMutual

Communication, Collaboration, Positivity

Moment I Knew I Belonged in the Meetings Industry: I started in this industry with little planning experience, so the moments I have felt that I really belonged in the meetings industry is when my teammates/colleagues/friends that are seasoned event planners have complimented me on my skillset. Without their guidance, I never would have learned this profession as quickly as I did (and still am learning), so their recognition, whenever I receive it, truly makes me feel like I belong. I am not sure they know what a value they have been to me, but their words and confidence in me gives me the confidence to continue.

Welcoming Strategy: I try to make everyone feel welcome in all facets of my life by the cliche “treat others how you would like to be treated.” I go into situations and events with a positive mindset and remind myself we are here to learn, grow and enjoy our time whether that is at our job, at our events or in our daily life. When in doubt, I smile daily, sometimes the worst of moments, and the most intimidating of situations, can be fixed by just seeing a smile and knowing someone is there to hopefully make your day brighter.

Next Goal: My next goal I am pursuing is to become a more well-rounded planner by learning about different types of events and taking on a larger role within our event technology team. I want to better understand how to utilize and promote different tools for the benefit of our team and events, as well as enhance our trust and relationship with our clients. I hope to always continue to grow and learn in our ever-evolving industry.

Selina Mullenax, CMP, CPCE

Account Executive, CORT Events

Inclusive, Imaginative, Impactful

Moment I Knew I Belonged in the Meetings Industry: I started volunteering with industry associations right after graduating with my bachelor’s degrees. From a younger age, I challenged myself to design educational, networking and celebratory events for event professionals. While I still serve on local boards, I recently expanded my volunteerism to include the NACE National Conference (for which I was a Co-Ambassador in 2022) and the catersource + The Special Event’s Opening Night Party in 2023. I feel that moment of belonging every single time a random idea comes to fruition and someone enjoys it.

Welcoming Strategy: In Central Florida, we always greet every single person who enters and make a point to introduce them to someone else. I once had a younger person tell me that she did not see anybody who looked like her at one of the events and it fueled a fire in me. In the events mentioned above, making people feel welcome was something we would intentionally design into our events as this is something I truly care about. Every touchpoint at an event can be infused with inclusivity–from the food to the music, the attire and event the furnishings.

Next Goal: I am in my final semester for a master’s in event leadership from University of Central Florida’s Rosen College of Hospitality Management. With this, I hope to continue to share my thought leadership to elevate our industry.

Lillian Nguyen, Masters in Event Management, Cvent Virtual Events Certification

Event Security Planner, Meta (with Milestone Technologies)

Energetic, Inclusive, Dynamic

Moment I Knew I Belonged in the Meetings Industry: I found my sense of belonging in the events industry as I connected with fellow planners who shared common challenges and a commitment to making an impact through events This was all ignited further during the pandemic. I grew frustrated with the lack of attendee engagement in virtual events. This frustration fueled my passion and curiosity about redefining the approach to virtual event presentations. I presented my thesis at IMEX, articulated the challenges of cognitive information overload in online events and proposed innovative strategies for enhancing engagement. This experience solidified my dedication to the realm of events. I found fulfillment in navigating the intricacies of virtual engagement and committed to advancing impactful event planning in this ever-evolving landscape, ensuring it remains a continuous pursuit in my professional journey.

Welcoming Strategy: I foster a welcoming environment through my role as a catalyst for meaningful conversations. Whether with my team, at events, or in everyday life, I prioritize acknowledging and valuing every voice. Taking a proactive leadership stance, I offer clear guidance infused with enthusiasm. Creating a conducive setting is paramount to me, where individuals feel entirely at ease expressing themselves. I love the arts and implement creative approaches that extend to professional and personal aspects, adding an inclusive and vibrant touch. In essence, my commitment is to curate a sense of genuine community. I truly thrive on being the energy to the room and ensuring that everyone feels valued and heard across various facets of life.

Next Goal: For 2024, my focus lies on achieving two significant milestones. First, I am actively pursuing my CMP certification, aiming to elevate my expertise in event management. Additionally, I am dedicated to attaining the PCMA’s 20 in Their 20s award, a recognition that acknowledges outstanding young professionals in the events industry!

Kadejah Pearson Omokaro, MBA, DES

Event Manager, National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP)

Experiential, Innovative, Strategic

Moment I Knew I Belonged in the Meetings Industry: When I attended my first industry-specific conference, I was about two years into the industry, truly embracing the idea of a career in events. Attending solo, I entered a realm of unknown faces. Yet, amidst the sea of strangers, I found an unexpected community. Their warmth and encouragement enveloped me, fostering invaluable connections that have shaped my trajectory in the industry. It was at that moment, amid shared passions and collaborative spirits, that I realized I belonged. This pivotal experience affirmed my place in the meetings industry, igniting a sense of purpose and belonging that continues to fuel my journey today.

Welcoming Strategy: I ensure everyone on my team feels welcome by taking a sincere interest in their growth journey and aspirations, especially those who report directly to me. I actively collaborate with them to craft personalized plans for their development. At events, inclusivity is paramount. I continually innovate ways to ensure the audience feels valued and included, whether through immersive experiences, thoughtfully curated cuisine, comfortable accommodations, or the very first point of contact, like registration forms. In life, I extend this approach by authentically engaging with individuals based on their interests, prioritizing genuine connections over transactional exchanges. Making everyone feel welcome is not just a practice but a principle I embody across all facets of interaction.

Next Goal: My current pursuit involves obtaining my CMP certification, a crucial step towards advancing into a director of meetings and events role. Looking ahead, I aspire to emerge as a thought leader in the events industry, influencing strategic decisions at an executive level. On a personal level, I harbor ambitions of owning a venue tailored for events, a venture that aligns with my passion for creating memorable experiences. This journey reflects my dedication to professional growth, coupled with aspirations to leave a lasting impact on the industry and cultivate spaces where unforgettable moments unfold.

Rachel Rosenberg

Social Media & Reputation Specialist, Portola Hotel & Spa

Imagination, Discovery, Wonder

Moment I Knew I Belonged in the Meetings Industry: On my first day on the job at the Portola Hotel & Spa, I almost didn’t come in. I had been battling years of anxiety and imposter syndrome and I almost let the doubts win; doubts that told me I wasn’t fit for this new position and industry. However, I decided I was more than those fears. Though my manager didn’t know it at the time, it was her understanding and hospitality that day that made me see this was an industry where I belonged. Today, I’m proud to serve in this industry that I love with confidence.

Welcoming Strategy: Every day I strive to make people feel welcome before they even arrive at our hotel. Using social media to inspire wonder, I love to invite guests to discover all that our destination has to offer. I also find that bringing optimism and warmth to my interactions online and in real life makes people feel at ease and brings the best out of them.

Next Goal: I’m eager to advance in my career and obtain a leadership position as I look to challenge myself and expand my capabilities. No matter where my career takes me, I look forward to continually inspiring others and bringing creativity to my work.

Francis Smith

Meetings and Events Planning Manager, Flik Hospitality

Trust, Communication, Creativity

Moment I Knew I Belonged in the Meetings Industry: I think the moment I truly felt like I belonged in the industry was when I hosted one of the biggest events of my career so far in 2019. I was working in Washington, D.C. and still getting my footing in the event industry; I was still finding my voice. This event showed me I was just more than “the help,” that who I was and what I brought to the table was enough to have a seat at the table.

Welcoming Strategy: I make everyone feel welcome by getting to know everyone and understanding their story; everyone has their own story and it’s important to remind them that their story matters. Once I connect with them on who they are, I get a better idea of what they need and how I can be of service to them.

Next Goal: At this time, I’m working hard and studying hard to earn my CMP certification by Spring 2024.

Laura Woods

Marketing Communications and Events Manager, JAMIS Software Corporation

Patience, Focus, Creativity

Moment I Knew I Belonged in the Meetings Industry: My spark ignited a few years ago when my incredible company entrusted me with leading our events department–and everything just fell into place! Bringing my creativity to life in organizing our company’s corporate events became thrilling. Witnessing the joy on everyone’s faces as they immersed themselves in the events I helped craft became my ultimate motivation. There’s an unparalleled sense of fulfillment in seeing people relish the result of countless hours dedicated to coordination. It’s not just a job; it’s the gratifying experience of creating moments that resonate with others. This is when I knew I belonged!

Welcoming Strategy: Becoming a meeting planner unveils the intimate nature of the attendee experience. I extend this understanding into both my personal and professional life. An essential aspect is actively listening to the needs of others. My greatest joy stems from witnessing people smile and enjoy the moment. Recognizing that people crave being heard, appreciated, and respected, I prioritize these values in both my personal and professional interactions. I firmly believe that exceptional ideas emerge from collaboration and teamwork. Whether it’s my team, friends, or event attendees, I approach them all with the same warmth and care, fostering a sense of family.

I would love to get my CMP, which will equip me with the knowledge to increase attendance and overall satisfaction with the events I coordinate. This industry is full of amazing planners and I’m very blessed to have met so many amazing mentors over the last two years.
