A taste of belonging
There was something familiar about Puerto Rico that I couldn’t quite put my finger on at first. It was a subtle sense of comfort that made the experience feel less like a FAM trip and more like a carefully curated small-group getaway.
If there is one thing the people of Puerto Rico made abundantly clear, it is this: They love their home, and they want everyone who sets foot on its soil to love it almost as much as they do.
The Dining Table of Hospitality
It finally hit me about a day and a half into the trip. From a cultural standpoint, the level of care and hospitality reminded me a lot of my family in the Philippines. When people opened their restaurants to us, it felt as though they were opening their homes. Meals weren’t simply stopping points to recharge. They were events designed to showcase a deep level of care and consideration. We were building community roots in real time, and each plate of food was part of that process.
Puerto Rico’s gastronomy scene is next level. If your event isn’t tied to F&B in some way, shape or form, are you truly taking advantage of what the destination has to offer?

One standout location is Bartolo, a family-owned restaurant in San Juan’s Miramar district. Like many of the meals throughout the trip, we dined family-style and chatted with the chef through the swinging door separating the open kitchen from the dining room. The restaurant’s menu draws from Puerto Rican culinary traditions, with dishes prepared using fresh ingredients and Puerto Rican sazón.
Another strong experience for groups is Culinary U, an event space designed for interactive culinary programming and private dinners. Teams can get a front-row seat during a mixology or culinary experience. I had the opportunity to try both, including crafting my own cocktail. It was awe-inspiring to watch our meal being prepared in real time as the chef talked us through his process. Seeing it come together from start to finish was both humbling and satisfying.
Another memorable team-building experience can be found at Casa Artesano. We participated in a rum tasting paired with chocolates before mixing our own drinks. The experience connected deeply with Puerto Rico’s identity, artistry and sense of community. Casa Artesano itself is rooted in the island’s history of rum-making, with an emphasis on craftsmanship, heritage and intention.
A Little Bit of Everything
As I checked into La Concha Resort, Puerto Rico, Autograph Collection, I couldn’t help but look toward the center of the lobby, where it felt as though a party was already underway. For a first impression, it was perfect and entirely by design. Yet while the unofficial party continued downstairs, my upstairs balcony remained peaceful, filled only with the sound of ocean waves.

Wyndham Grand Rio Mar Rainforest, Beach & Golf Resort in Río Grande offers an experience that is almost difficult to believe: Stand on one side and you face the ocean; turn toward the other and you face the rainforest. For planners hoping to give attendees a little perspective, mission accomplished. The 600-acre resort sits near El Yunque National Forest and includes beachfront space, golf, pools, a spa and multiple restaurants and lounges.
Planners should also explore San Juan’s Convention District. Puerto Rico Convention Center, the largest convention center in the Caribbean, anchors the area. Nearby, Sheraton Puerto Rico Resort & Casino and Distrito T-Mobile make it possible to connect accommodations, meetings, dining and entertainment within one district.
Other memorable stops included MADMi, El Choliseo, Hotel El Convento, Sofrito Tours, Levant at La Concha and Amaya at Wyndham Grand Rio Mar.
