visit-syracuse-new-york

Bring on the heat, Syracuse. Landmarks? Yeah, we got those. But we learned a long time ago that nothing creates more lasting memories than the perfect meal. In Syracuse, every meal is perfect, especially if you like it spicy. Try Pastabilities’ Hot Tomato Oil. This beautiful blend of tomatoes, red pepper, olive oil and huge chunks of garlic will make your eyeballs pop. Use it as dip for Italian stretch bread, a sauce for pasta or a base for spicy fried eggs. Try Dinosaur Bar-B-Que’s Wango Tango Sauce to really heat up ribs, pulled pork or chicken. Slip into Empire Brewing and cool down with the latest local ale while getting hotter with Sweet Fire, Finger Lake’s version of andouille sausage. You can travel to conferences in other cities, but you won’t get the great tastes of Syracuse out of your head. Neither will your attendees.

What’s more, the Pennsylvania Convention Center is just a few blocks away. Other must-see attractions include any one of our more than 3,800 murals, the Barnes Foundation, one of the largest private collections of Post-Impressionist and early Modern paintings, our many historic sites and our famous Reading Terminal Market, just steps away from the convention center. Conveniently located in the Northeast region of the United States, we’re just 90 minutes from New York City and two hours from Washington, D.C., by train. Sitting in a meeting in the Pocono Mountains is inspiring. Looking out the window at the scenic backdrop, you feel like you and your company can accomplish anything. It doesn’t matter the season—the backdrop is always spectacular, as are the team-building activities the region offers. With easy access from Interstates 80, 81, 84, 380 and 476, the Pocono Mountains are just a short drive from New York City and Philadelphia, and unlike the cities, there’s free parking. Whether you’re meeting with a group of 10 or 1,000, the Pocono Mountains offer plans that include meals, meeting space, lodging accommodations and activities once the meetings are over. Two of the region’s newest spaces are Kalahari Resorts and Conventions and Camelback Lodge (pictured). They, like many of the region’s resorts, are family/privately owned. Where was the last place you held a meeting and met the owner?

travel-tacoma-pierce-county-washingtonOne of my favorite things about our destination is the accessible art culture. As the birthplace of artist Dale Chihuly, the Chihuly Bridge of Glass—a pedestrian bridge with glass installations that lead from the Museum of Glass rooftop to downtown—is a must-see! Tacoma was just listed in Forbes magazine as one of the “13 Art Trips You Need to Take.” Visitors love to create their own unique glass piece at a local hot shop. They can explore seven museums within walking distance, including LeMay–America’s Car Museum, the largest automotive museum in North America. Unique venues like this, along with our 119,000-square-foot convention center and the free light rail, allow meeting planners to have the run of the city. We love our mild Pacific Northwest climate and the laid-back friendly atmosphere that allows everyone to explore (and meet) at their own pace.

visit-anaheim-californiaAnaheim is an energetic and social community, perfect for attendees to “check in” and “share” memorable meeting memories. At this year’s annual VidCon, the ultimate fan convention for YouTube stars and fans, Anaheim went “viral.” The sun was shining as it does 320-plus days a year and the entire city felt the electricity. Attendees “liked” the Anaheim Convention Center Campus’ Grand Plaza, a California-inspired outdoor venue, steps from more than 4,000 hotel rooms. VidCon fans networked under a canopy of palm trees and stringed twinkle lights, while dancing to live music and dining on delectable food truck fare. Between sessions, VidCon attendees made Anaheim the star of new video content, capturing scenes at Disneyland Resort, rooting for the Anaheim Angels baseball team and communally dining downtown at the Anaheim Packing House. sacramento-convention-visitors-burea-californiaSacramento is full of interesting history, rich culture and a vibrant arts scene, but one constant I’ve really been able to sink my teeth into over my 16 years as president and CEO of the Sacramento Convention & Visitors Bureau is the excellent food. Sacramento isn’t just the capital of California: It’s America’s Farm-to-Fork Capital, with the freshest food served at our hotels and meeting facilities. After a long day of conferences, the exciting downtown core is a great place to explore on foot for the nearest night spot serving local beer and wine. With the new arena, the Golden 1 Center, coming downtown in 2016 just down the street from the Sacramento Convention Center and new hotels scheduled to open next year, it’s a better time than ever to meet in Sacramento.

Santa Fe’s been called “The City Different” for over a century because our Native American, Spanish and Anglo peoples have always created a special Santa Fe Style: earth-toned adobe architecture, cuisine based on the world’s best roasted chile, a density of vibrant arts found nowhere else surrounded by incredibly scenic outdoor beauty, 310-plus days of sunshine and mild temperatures year-round. There are countless iconic locations for self-portraits, but my famous friend Zozobra and I chose the LEED Gold Santa Fe Convention Center for its state-of-the-art audio/visual capabilities yet historic adobe style, traditional Navajo rugs, Spanish Colonial tin accents and carved furniture from local artisans. Whilst the city is probably momanchesterst famous for its football (soccer) and musical exports or asthe birthplace of the Industrial Revolution, Manchester prides itself on being a place for innovators to thrive. Whether that’s through nurturing great achievers such as computer pioneer Alan Turing and suffragette leader Emmeline Pankhurst, or bringing together people such as Mr. Rolls and Mr. Royce, great minds have always met in Manchester. This tradition continues and it is the city’s industrial and academic strengths which today give Manchester an added edge to attract international conferences, especially in the biomedicine, advanced materials and engineering sectors. The city of Cape Town (CT) in South Africa isknown as a top leisure destination, butincreasingly is becoming a location to combine business and leisure travel, resulting in greater business tourism in recent years, especially at the luxury level. The International Congress and Convention Association (ICCA) listed Cape Town as the No. 1 business destination in Africa for business events. There are many new initiatives to cater to the business market. The international airport has been upgraded. The successful CT International Convention Centre is currently expanding, and large new corporate office developments are planned. In addition, a new high-tech conference facility for up to 1,900 delegates will open in early 2016. There’s no better place to explore the Chileessence and spirit of Chile than in Santiago. Chile’scapital city is full of contrasts, where cultural heritage and modernity live happily alongside one another. It’s renowned for its safety and stable economy, as well as for its cosmopolitan edge, and has consistently ranked among the top cities for quality of life in the region.

The Andean Mountain Range majestically looms over Santiago, while the San Cristobal Hill breathes green life into the city. On the weekends, thousands of Santiaguinos jog along the paths up this hill, take their bikes out for a ride, or simply head out for a good family stroll. Its world-class business tourism infrastructure provides more than 10,000 hotel rooms in four- and five-star hotels, convention centers for more than 7,000 delegates and exhibition spaces, which cover a surface of more than 355,000 sq. ft. What I love about Victoria, B.C. is the contrasts. Victoria is a place where heritage meetshigh tech, and where Old World charm meets New World experiences. We’re an urban city close to nature, so whether you’re looking for relaxing rejuvenation, cultural vibrancy or outdoor adventure, there’s no shortage of options to satisfy everyone. The welcoming size and walkability of Victoria stimulates a deeper dimension of networking, too. People connect here in a way bigger cities just can’t accommodate. We are so creative here; we even give some highly valued meeting planners a pair of customized Converse tennis shoes when they commit large meetings to Greater Victoria. Visitors and delegates will experience chance encounters in our Inner Harbour, unplanned conversations at our oceanfront cafes and impromptu meetings at our local attractions. And the natural beauty of the city inspires creativity and conversation. In Victoria, meetings have a life beyond the meeting space.

Hong Kong is a place like no other. Fromhong-kong having one of the largest seated bronze Buddhastatues in the world to the oldest junk boat sailing through the majestic Victoria Harbour, Asia’s world city is filled with culture and sophistication. My favorite things about Hong Kong are the festivals held throughout the year to celebrate Hong Kong’s living culture, and the street markets where even the pickiest of shoppers find what they’re looking for. The flower market at Mong Kok is home to a variety of colorful flowers, various fragrances and exotic plants. With the Mid-Autumn Festival taking place in early September, I thought it would be fitting to share one of Hong Kong’s celebrated pastries, the moon cake. During the festival, families gather to celebrate the full moon while sharing moon cakes to wish relatives and friends a long and happy life.

I took this selfie during Sail Amsterdam hollandin August. The largest nautical public event inEurope happens once every five years. Over 50 tall ships from all over the world have moored at the Amsterdam IJ-harbour, and more than 1.5 million visitors come to Amsterdam to see them. It’s great to watch the ships from land, but even more fun to watch in a boat on the water. Seeing the masts and sails reminds me of the maritime history of our country, especially during the Golden Age. This special event is just one reason that makes Holland a great meeting destination. Holland is a country rich in tradition and culture, which is celebrated through various events, concerts and other types of entertainment. We can always ensure an enjoyable program in Holland.

With a Jack Nicklaus-designed golf course, an award-winning spa and four restaurants, it’s easy to see how The Ritz gives Discover Marana a property to hang it’s cowboy hat on.

There are actually four championship courses in Marana, offering desert golf at its finest with saguaro-lined fairways and undulating greens set against endless blue skies. The Gallery Golf Club features two highly acclaimed courses, allowing for group events for up to 288. The property also features a spa, a fitness center and tennis courts. The dining facility holds up to 150, with outdoor space for up to 300.

“Marana serves as the gateway to Southern Arizona,” said Toby Parks, tourism and marketing manager for Discover Marana. “The website is an amazing foundation to promote tourism opportunities in the region as well as hotels to stay at in the community.”

branson-convention-centerDriving into town from Springfield-Branson National Airport (SGF) with the friendly representatives of Explore Branson, I passed gas stations advertising fuel for $2.07 per gallon. It was immediately evident that Branson was an affordable place for meetings (as well as everything else!)

Branson is situated in the southern part of the state—near the Arkansas border— a four-hour drive from St. Louis and Kansas City. While some might expect Branson to be unsophisticated, it boasts restaurants that stand up to the best eateries in San Francisco. We discovered that the first evening at Level 2 Steakhouse—Hilton Branson Convention Hotel’s fine dining establishment—where both the cuisine and service were spot on.

But there’s much more to Branson than food.  Planners who want a destination featuring natural beauty, a myriad of outdoor activities and plenty of all-American fun should take a closer look.

Natural Wonders

Branson, known for its plethora of caves and clean lakes brimming with fish, offers an abundance of recreational opportunities for nature lovers. The region is home base for Bass Pro Shops—a chain of super stores selling outdoor equipment—and founder Johnny Morris still lives in the area.

Dogwood Canyon Nature Park in nearby Lampe offers excellent hiking, biking and fishing. The venue, which boasts beautiful chapels and areas with waterfalls, is expanding—they are in the process of building an enormous tree house that can be rented out;  a new restaurant and general store is slated to open in 2016.

Entertainment

Branson is famous for its professionally-staged live shows, which run the gamut from music to comedy and variety. On any given night there are usually two dozen to choose from, including a dinner show that takes place on the water in Table Rock Lake, in Showboat Branson Belle. I saw (and totally enjoyed) Million Dollar Quartet—a musical about one historic night when Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis and Carl Perkins got together and jammed in Sam Phillips’ Sun Studio in Memphis.

Silver Dollar City is a wholesome, family-friendly 1880’s-style attraction that draws millions who enjoy the rides, shows and people in period costumes demonstrating classic American crafts such as glass blowing and crocheting.

For more modern entertainment, visit Branson Landing—a shopping and restaurant district with more than 100 retail establishments. Take a quick yet exhilarating zip line ride over the lake at Parakeet Pete’s, or sample some  locally-made moonshine at Missouri Mountain Moonshine. (It comes in a wide variety of flavors—my personal favorite was Sweet Tea.)

Golf is a big draw during the day in Branson, but it can also be enjoyed at night. Try a round of glow-in-the-dark golf at Thousand Hills Golf Resort. (Make sure not to try driving the golf carts around in the pitch black night after drinking the above-mentioned moonshine!)

Meetings

BCCBranson Convention Center is an impressive, state of the art facility with 220,000 sq. ft. of flexible meeting space. The immaculate exhibit hall, which hosts everything from car shows to livestock, has 47,000 sq. ft. The 23,000-square-foot ballroom boasts a sophisticated lighting system. High-end catering is provided by the professional culinary team of Savor.

Big Cedar Lodge near Table Rock Lake is a lovely meeting venue with 246 guest rooms. The visually beautiful Grandview Conference Center is loaded with rustic charm, and boasts almost 20,000 sq. ft. of meeting space.

Fall-Creek_VIP-Set-JMM_4308Top of the Rock is another impressive meeting space. Set on an exclusive golf course, it was built by native son Johnny Morris. An onsite natural history museum features skeletons of ancient creatures that once roamed the Ozarks, as well as stuffed moose and deer, historic Civil War relics and Native American artifacts. Dine at any of several restaurants including Arnie’s Barn, an actual barn that once belonged to golf legend Arnold Palmer, and be sure to tour the unique wine cellar.

Finally, there is Chateau on the Lake Resort Spa & Convention Center—a spectacular, AAA Four Diamond property that resembles a castle and overlooks Table Rock Lake. In addition to a fabulous spa, a variety of fine restaurants, a movie theater and 301 luxurious guest rooms, the pristine property features 43,500 sq. ft. of meeting space.

Accommodations

The CVB estimates that there are 16,000 guest rooms, at all different price points, in the Branson area. Planners that want to be downtown near the convention center need look no further than Hilton Branson Convention Hotel, which is connected to the facility and has 292 guest rooms. The relatively new hotel was unexpectedly refreshed in 2012 after a tornado rolled through town, destroying much of the building. If planners require more guest rooms, Hilton Promenade at Branson Landing (one short block away) has 242 more.

Wrap Up

Branson is a safe, wholesome, family-oriented destination, with a helpful CVB eager to highlight the attributes of the region. With its many outdoor activities, it is a popular choice for planners in the summer months. But it is also popular in the winter. On Nov. 1 the entire town apparently shifts into high gear; every store puts up Christmas decorations and the shows incorporate holiday themes. Branson is a year-round delight of a destination!

Independence_HallPhiladelphia Convention & Visitors Bureau (PHLCVB) and Valley Forge Tourism & Convention Board (VFTCB) are teaming up with Democratic National Convention Committee to ensure success when the 35,000-person event takes place in July 25-28, 2016.

The Democratic National Convention, which will be held at Philadelphia’s Wells Fargo Center, will need more than 15,000 hotel rooms during convention week. The plan calls for 500 buses to provide transportation during the convention to properties in adjacent counties.

“It is truly exciting to be hosting a convention like the Democratic National Convention in Philadelphia, which will provide invaluable exposure for our city,” said Julie Coker Graham, executive vice president of  PHLCVB.  “In addition to our superb hotel options, we are thrilled to be able to showcase to the convention delegates our walkability, our historic attractions like Independence Hall where the Declaration of Independence and the National Constitution were signed, our many cultural institutions, our eclectic dining scene and all of the other qualities that make Philadelphia one of the nation’s most sought after cities for hosting a meeting.”

The Democratic National Convention is the nominating event for the Democratic candidates for president and vice president in addition to a time for policy reviews and changes for the party.  Event organizers are hoping that the event is the most engaging, innovative and forward-looking convention in the party’s history, with plans to leverage technology to help take the convention experience beyond the host venue.

“We certainly value this exciting opportunity to partner with the Democratic National Convention Committee through our relationship with the PHLCVB,” said Mike Bowman, VFTCB President and CEO. “With our area’s close proximity to the Wells Fargo Center, high-quality hotels and world-class shopping, and of course, the iconic Valley Forge National Historical Park, this momentous event will have a significant and long-lasting economic impact on our region.”

convention-center-expansionDenver meetings and events got a big boost on Nov. 3 when voters overwhelmingly approved funding to expand Colorado Convention Center. The special initiative also calls for construction of the new National Western Center, which will host entertainment events and include educational facilities.

The convention center’s expansion and upgrades will include 85,000 sq. ft. of new flexible meeting space and 120,000 sq. ft. of new prefunction and service space, including a 50,000-square-foot outdoor terrace on the convention center roof. The prefunction and outdoor event spaces will have spectacular views of the Rocky Mountains and Denver skyline. Technology will include increased capacity for Wi-Fi and streaming video.

“We’re thrilled to have the support of the people of Denver behind our city’s convention and tourism industry” said Richard Scharf, president and CEO of Visit Denver.

“We are just completing a master plan for the Colorado Convention Center, and now with the voters’ approval we should be able to put out an RFP for an architect by the end of the year,” Scarf said. “We have established what we need, and now we will move ahead with the final design and construction.”

Suggested improvements were identified from a year-long study by Strategic Advisory Group,  which reached out to more than 120 meeting professionals, industry leaders and community stakeholders to develop goals.

“We are very pleased with the preliminary designs as they really capture the Rocky Mountain spirit and take advantage of Denver’s fantastic views and year-round mild weather,” said Rachel Benedick, vice president of sales and services for Visit Denver. “With expansion on the reinforced roof area, we anticipate very little impact to conventions during this time.”

No timeline has been announced regarding the completion of the expansion.

The convention center turned 25 in June.

It generates more than $500 million in annual economic impact, totaling more than $4.8 billion since the center was expanded in 2004. Downtown improvements complement the venue. More than 3,000 hotel rooms will soon be located within one block of the convention center, with nearly 10,000 hotel rooms within walking distance expected by the end of 2016.

Thirumerni Naidoo, business development manager for Cape Town Convention and Visitors Bureau, spoke with Smart Meetings TV at 2015’s IMEX America, and said South Africa is known worldwide for its scenic beauty and miles of coastline. The country is home to Table Mountain, one of the world’s natural wonders. Naidoo adds that Cape Town is enjoying an increase of hotels, mergers and convention centers, and considers the United States to be their primary market.

Naidoo shares that IMEX has brought the Cape Town Convention and Visitors Bureau an impressive number of connections. She also recognizes that meeting planners are looking for new and unique experiences, and that the meetings industry has been pleased with the growth in infrastructure and development throughout Cape Town.

Naidoo notes that South Africa’s most popular destinations include Cape Town and Johannesburg.
