New Orleans, a Decade After Katrina

When Hurricane Katrina struck the Gulf Coast a decade ago on Aug. 29, 2005, the result was catastrophic, especially in New Orleans. The Category 3 storm, which had sustained winds of up to 140 mph, caused levees to collapse, flooding 80 percent of the low-lying city. Approximately 1,800 people in the region lost their lives, several hundred thousand residents were permanently displaced, and tens of thousands of homes and businesses were completely destroyed. Financially, experts estimate that the devastation topped $100 billion.

Historically, New Orleans was no stranger to natural disasters. Over the past century the resilient city had survived five other big hurricanes. There is no doubt, however, that Hurricane Katrina crippled tourism in a city that depends on it. Statistics from the New Orleans Convention and Visitors Bureau indicate that immediately following the disaster the number of visitors to New Orleans shrank to 3.7 million, and the city had to cancel $2 billion in business.

Aug. 29 marks the 10-year anniversary of the calamity. A decade after Katrina, New Orleans  will commemorate the somber event with wreath laying ceremonies, a conference, prayer services and more. But the city that loves to party wants event planners to know that New Orleans has bounced back, and is ready and eager to host your next conference or event.

How New Orleans Bounced Back

While much of the city was devastated, the good news was that the most historic regions of New Orleans, notably Marigny and the popular French Quarter, were relatively intact after the storm. The damaged infrastructure in other parts of the city has been rebuilt and even expanded, which is reeling business and tourists back. Statistics indicate that in 2014, the number of visitors had climbed back up to 9.52 million. They spent a total of $6.81 billion, the highest visitor spending in city’s history.

As Ernie Smith reports for associationsnow.com, the city has 600 more restaurants than it did in 2005, and more than 850 new hotel rooms. New Orleans is also spending hundreds of millions of dollars to expand and refurbish both its airport and convention center. According to the CVB, Louis Armstrong International Airport (MSY) is actually the fastest growing airport in the U.S. Its numbers have surpassed pre-Hurricane Katrina days. It served 9,785,394 passengers in 2014, outpacing the 2004 total of 9,733,178 passengers.

The New Orleans Convention & Visitors Bureau could not be more pleased about the strong recovery of the region’s economy, and points out that accolades are flowing in from many sources. Earlier this year Travel + Leisure named New Orleans the second-best city to visit in the United States, the second consecutive year it has garnered the ranking of a world-class destination. Conde Nast Traveler called it the “Best U.S. City for Business Travelers,” while The New York Times deemed it one of the “52 Places to Go in 2015.”

A Decade Later

It is clear that the city is once again a destination hotspot. New Orleans a decade after Katrina has surged back to life and reclaimed its position as one of America’s most vibrant and enjoyable cities.

London & Partners' Events Have Heart

How creative is London & Partners? Consider that the city’s promotional company has teamed up with several other groups to create the  London Heart Trail in conjunction with the European Society of  Cardiology’s annual congress that meets at ExCeL London next week.

Proving that London & Partners’ events have heart, the new interactive walk runs along the South Bank between the London Eye and Tower Bridge, featuring challenges that provide insights about heart health through using the London Heart Trail App. The trail allows participants to take in iconic sights along the South Bank and encourages locals and visitors to see the city on foot.

In addition to London & Partners, the trail was developed in association with the British Heart Foundation, King’s Health Partners and ExCeL London. It was produced by Wildgoose Events, an award-winning team-building events specialist.

“We are excited to be hosting the European Society of  Cardiology  congress this year and to be supporting their mission to reduce the burden of cardiovascular disease in Europe,” says James Rees, executive director of ExCeL London. “The heart trail will be a perfect way for London to show its support for this mission and help to drive a legacy of health awareness in London and the UK as a result.”

Five-Day Conference

The European Society of Cardiology (ESC) congress will run Aug. 29-Sept. 2. It is expected to draw 35,000 cardiologists for one of the largest and most influential cardiovascular events in the world. The event is projected to generate more than $150 million in economic benefit for London. It takes place just over a year since the launch of the MedCity, an organization developed to promote the life sciences industry in London and the greater southeast of England.

“It’s an honor to welcome thousands of international cardiology experts to London,” said London Mayor Boris Johnson. “The focus of the medical world will once more be on our great city as a leader in science, education and medical innovation, making it the perfect opportunity to also get Londoners and visitors thinking about the simple steps they can take to look after their health.”

The trail will be open through Sept. 3. There are 12 hotspots, seven of which are hidden. Prime locations along the route including City Pier and the London Eye will also feature heart-shaped trees. The project definitely proves that London & Partners’ events have heart.

MinnesotaExplore Minnesota Director and CEO John Edman has been named national State Tourism Director of the Year for 2015.

The top tourism director award is voted upon annually by the U.S. Travel Association’s National Council of State Tourism Directors. Edman was honored before more than 800 of his peers Monday during the Educational Seminar for Tourism Organizations (ESTO) conference in Portland, Oregon.

“Travel and tourism are a pivotal benefit to any state’s economy, but it’s a hyper-competitive global market for those dollars that demands an efficient and effective promotion program,” said Roger Dow, U.S. Travel Association president and CEO. “This award represents an acknowledgment that under John Edman’s leadership, the people of Minnesota are served by one of the very best. John’s smarts and work ethic have paid enormous dividends for the industry not just in Minnesota, but nationally as well.”

State Tourism Director of the Year Award Salutes 25 Years of Service

State Tourism Director of the YearEdman has more than 25 years of senior management, sales and marketing experience in the hospitality industry. He is the state’s chief spokesperson for tourism-related issues, and manages an agency with approximately 60 full-time staff and an annual budget of $13.9 million.

Edman has developed new marketing strategies for Minnesota tourism, creating new public and private marketing partnerships that have generated over $5 million in private industry funding each year. He spearheaded the creation of Minnesota’s largest-ever tourism marketing campaign, #OnlyinMN, in 2014. Edman serves in national and state leadership positions on numerous organizations and boards including: the National Council of State Tourism Directors, the U.S. Travel Association board, Great Lakes USA, Mississippi River Country, the Minneapolis/St. Paul Airport Foundation, the Minnesota Film and TV board, and the University of Minnesota Tourism Center.

Visit Santa Barbara

The Santa Barbara experience was brought together under one roof at a pop-up event yesterday at Naked Kitchen SF. Visit Santa Barbara invited Bay Area planners to sample artful dishes and partake in creative activities perfect for groups.

The pop-up restaurant, inside of a purple converted Queen Victorian built in 1870, was an intimate setting for about 30 hotel and meeting professionals in attendance. Pop-up dinners and private events are regularly held in the first floor space.

Evening attendees signed up for old-fashioned tintype portraits at the pop-up portrait studio. Photographer Lindsey Ross of La Chambre Photographique asked her subjects to sit straight and hold an expressionless face for a few minutes. The result was an old-fashioned looking photograph, a world apart from flash photography and mega-pixel images.

In the kitchen, hors d’oeuvres were beautifully displayed by award-winning chef Vincent Lesage of Bacara Resort & Spa. Figs, salami, crostini, brie cheese, grapes and pesto spreads were arranged on rustic wooden slabs. Among the selection of dishes, attendees could also taste raw sea urchin with a special aioli sauce—a seafood delicacy fresh from the Santa Barbara coast. At Bacara Resort & Spa, groups can work with the chef to customize menus. Wines at the event were supplied by Margerum Wine Company, which introduced a new Barden Wine Collection made from Pinot grapes.

Guests were encouraged to try their hand at master plating with the help of food photography professional Tara Jones from Eat This! Shoot That! She offered insider tips on how to capture food that looks almost too good to eat. For example, food looks more appealing in photos taken with higher light exposure. However, the opposite holds true for wine. For close-up food porn shots, she advises people to aim the camera as close to the dish as possible. Another option is to use the forward-facing camera and hold smartphones high above the plate for a bird’s-eye-view.

Visit Santa Barbara

Visit Santa Barbara President & CEO Kathy Janega-Dykes was eager to share the number of creative and fun-filled opportunities for corporate meetings and group activities. Karna Hughes, director of communications suggested Santa Barbara’s Funk Zone as a neighborhood that offers a number of food tours. The convention and visitors bureau is holding a sweepstakes for a free trip to Santa Barbara, now through Oct. 2. Participants are asked to share what makes them shine on Twitter and Instagram by using #HowIShine. For ideas and inspiration, visit IShineSB.com.

att-parkIt was Belt Buckle Night at AT&T Park on Thursday, where the San Francisco Giants were taking on the Cincinnati Reds. The first 20,000 fans received belt buckles compliments of the Scottsdale Convention & Visitors Bureau.

That may seem like an odd giveaway unless you understand that the Giants’ first baseman is Brandon Belt and that Scottsdale is the spring training home of San Francisco’s Major League Baseball team and its rabid fans.

Not only did Scottsdale CVB reach out to San Francisco fans, but the destination management organization also hosted media and meeting planners for a meet-and-mingle pregame session and then dinner and the game. It was the perfect business-meets-pleasure concept, with just the right balance of property updates and networking.

san-francisco-giants-gameWe watched the game from the spacious Audi Legends Club, which can hold up to 100 people. With great indoor and outdoor space, it was quiet enough to get a few extra details about Scottsdale properties and yet you had the option to sit outside in right field to soak up live-game ambience.

Before the game, we gathered in one of the park’s meeting rooms to hear from resort and hotel suppliers who joined the Scottsdale CVB during its San Francisco road trip. Besides showing appreciation to Giants’ fans who storm their city for a sports spring break of sorts, resort representatives had lots to share with us about their unique offerings.

Golf is a big deal in Scottsdale and to accommodate busy business travelers, resorts are devising ways to minimize the time it takes to participate. The Boulders Resort & Spa, for example, has two renowned golf courses.  The resort also has designated nine of  its shortest signature holes (all between 100 and 200 yards) on each course so guests may enjoy the experience in less time. Just zip past the par-5s in your golf cart to get to your next hole.

Talking Stick Resort is adjacent to Talking Stick Golf Club’s two championship golf courses. The resort also features one of the coolest trends to invade the sport, Topgolf, which is a cross between hitting balls at a driving range and bowling. Designed especially for groups, Topgolf allows golfers to strike balls out onto the range, where participants can score points for balls that land in specific target areas. It’s even set up similar to a bowling center, with food and beverages and group areas, similar to lanes.

It was great to learn more about Scottsdale and see the enthusiasm the CVB and suppliers share for our Giants. The Scottsdale CVB and resort reps definitely hit it out of the park while they were in town this week.

CVBs-Reveal-Best-Ideas-During-DMA-WestOne of the most stimulating sessions during the annual Destination Marketing Association of the West (DMA West) event is the Best Ideas Program. Each year the organization solicits submissions from convention and visitor bureaus from throughout the West to showcase innovative projects and creative marketing strategies by its members.

This year’s DMA West Destination Marketing Summit took place Sept. 23-25, in Ogden, Utah. The winning ideas from 2014-15 came from Flagstaff, Arizona; Lane County, Oregon; Marina del Rey, California; and Visit Salt Lake, Utah.

What’s cool about the best ideas recognition is that destination management organizations are rewarded for effective campaigns and get to share their triumphs with peers. Smart Meetings was particularly impressed with the idea coming out of Marina del Rey, which relied on social media and a partnership with Delray Beach, Florida, to get the word out about all there is to do in both destinations. The DMOs used stuff animals to tell their stories, capturing the mini mascots doing everything from visiting attractions to moving through their respective airports.

Congratulations to the winners and keep those best ideas coming!

Marina del Rey, California, Convention & Visitors Bureau

Project Title: Beach Buddies:“Beach Buddies” is a collaboration that was launched in 2014 by the Marina del Rey CVB and the Delray Beach Marketing Cooperative. The purpose of the West Coast/East Coast partnership is simple: showcase activities, attractions, dining and hotels in each destination while highlighting parallels between the two. Factors such as the shared “del rey” name, similar coastal chic vibes, and close proximity to major international airports helped to inspire “Beach Buddies;” however, one of the driving forces behind the concept was that both DMOs have limited budgets (less than $1 million) and a small staff (4-5 employees). Both DMOs were looking at ways to raise awareness of their respective destinations without overspending marketing dollars and knew that “Beach Buddies” would be a creative and effective way to share the offerings of both communities. It’s been a true grassroots effort from both teams, using social media platforms as the main foundation of the collaboration. “Beach Buddies” is seen through Instagram posts, blogs, custom hashtags and Facebook updates. The DMOs also introduced their respective mascots – Marty the Pelican (Marina del Rey) and Swinton the Turtle (Delray Beach) – as the “Beach Buddies.” The DMOs created Facebook albums and Instagram hashtags that follow the mascots’ adventures throughout both towns, highlighting area dining, hotels, activities and events through frequent postings. Social media followers learn about each destination as Marty the Pelican gives a “bird’s eye view” of Delray Beach and Swinton the Turtle “comes out of his shell” in Marina del Rey. www.visitmarinadelrey.com

Flagstaff, Arizona, Convention & Visitors Bureau

Project Title: Flagstaff #VisitCool and Flagstaff Cool Zone:  This past July, Flagstaff Convention & Visitors Bureau launched a yearlong promotion in its top inbound market highlighting the temperature difference between the cool mountains of Flagstaff and the heat of the Phoenix metro area. Flagstaff placed nearly 17 tons of ice throughout the valley and engaged event-goers through brand ambassadors and contest entries. Encased in each ice feature were symbols of Flagstaff, including bikes, trekking poles, snowboards, telescopes and axes. Ambassadors used talking points to highlight the cool mountains of northern Arizona and engage visitors to sign up for nearly $2,500 of prizes, including a four-day getaway to Flagstaff and the actual bikes that were encased in ice. To continue the reach of the campaign, the Flagstaff CVB installed the Flagstaff Cool Zone in the heart of the Legends Entertainment District between the Arizona Diamondbacks stadium and Phoenix Suns arena. The Cool Zone features more than 1,200 square feet of Flagstaff imagery at street level, with a live temperature display and cooling misters. Throughout the year the CVB will ‘activate’ different spaces in the Legends District to highlight the seasonality of Flagstaff. The first of these was August 7, 2015, and once again featured trekking poles encased in ice. The entire program is supported with online video pre-roll and social ads, a temperature-based mobile display campaign and #VisitCool social engagement. The Flagstaff CVB has 11 partners involved in the program, which expands the reach of the campaign through their efforts as well. www.flagstaffarizona.org

Travel Lane County, Oregon

Project Title: Mobile Information Kiosk Explorer, MIKE the Bike: MIKE the Bike is a visitor center bike that engages and inspires. An extension of Travel Lane County’s easily accessible adventure brand, it increases both destination and organizational awareness among visitors, locals and industry stakeholders. The goal for the first year of MIKE the Bike was to design, build and implement a visitor services experience that allowed Travel Lane County to bring its brand and service to an active audience that was not using its brick and mortar locations. The bike also needed to convey the Travel Lane County brand while on the road. Versatile in design, the bike can be branded with either the DMO or sports commission logo. Introducing a new audience to the value of visitor services elevates the role of the DMO with a younger, active tech-savvy audience that values a personalized recommendation and yet doesn’t frequent traditional visitor centers. Locally made and human powered, MIKE the Bike demonstrates an authentic implementation of green and sustainable practices while promoting sustainable use of the local natural resources by visitors. Relying on well-trained staff to customize the destination message to the individual’s needs and interests reduces the number and variety of handouts that need to be produced. MIKE the Bike is a strong ambassador for both the destination and the DMO.www.eugenecascadescoast.org

Visit Salt Lake, Utah

Project Title: Mobile Attraction Pass:Visit Salt Lake partnered with a local company, Bandwango, to develop a SaaS model for software allowing destination marketing organizations like Visit Salt Lake to create, manage and sell mobile-friendly visitor passes designed to target any visitor segment. Visit Salt Lake currently uses this software for its Connect Pass product–a single pass valid at 13 attractions that the DMO has been selling for a number of years as a card-based system. Visit Salt Lake officially launched this product in May 2015. Since moving to a mobile-friendly platform, customers can now purchase directly from their mobile phone, receive a digital pass via text and email, and share and redeem their attraction tickets directly from their phone. Additionally, all of the local attraction partners and Visit Salt Lake members now have the ability to send visitors real-time spending incentives through this platform. Other features of this platform include private sale checkout sites for special groups, generation of promo codes for marketing and advertising purposes, pixel tracking to measure effectiveness of ad campaign through purchase, and affiliate marketing tools to facilitate distribution by third parties. Non-attractions can also sell through this platform, including restaurants, bars, retail stores, transportation companies and coupon books. This is not a native app. It is a web application that works across all online platforms and redemption can also occur via print-at-home vouchers for non-mobile visitors or international travelers. Visit Salt Lake plans on creating additional multi-attraction products, selling all of the attractions and others as individual products, and combining small groups of attractions based on the wants and needs of groups and meeting planners for the their citywide conventions. This allows ultimate flexibility and can all be booked online as well as from the registration site of an incoming convention. Visit Salt Lake staff envisions using this online technology to sell light-rail transportation from the airport to downtown to convention groups. All of these purchases can be managed and redeemed from one’s smart phone. Learn more at www.visitsaltlake.com/things-to-do/connect-pass/.

heon-kangPast. Present. Future. These words personify Seoul as an extraordinary capital city, and here at the Dongdaemun Design Plaza (pictured), you will find all three on display. Its futuristic design and metallic fluid shape immediately catch your attention and you can certainly see why it instantly became a Seoul landmark upon its 2014 unveiling. Located in a historic district, it also neighbors the ancient Dongdaemun, the “Great East Gate” that served as one of four entrances to the city during the Joseon Dynasty. From here you can also see remnants of the old fortress wall that protectively encircled the royal kingdom. No wonder the Dongdaemun Design Plaza has been the venue of choice for major events and exhibitions such as the Esprit Dior Exhibition, Andy Warhol Live exhibition and Seoul Fashion Show. This kind of harmonious convergence of seemingly contrasting themes and attributes is just one of the many reasons that Seoul is so attractive for business events.

The Travel Channel has called Pittsburgh “hip.” The New York Times said it is “cool.” Esquire magazine proclaimed it a “Must Visit.” First-time visitors often comment about Pittsburgh’s beauty, whether it’s their first view as they emerge from the Fort Pitt Tunnel (which inspired one writer to call us the only city with an entrance), or when they admire the downtown skyline as they ascend Mount Washington on the Monongahela or Duquesne inclines. Pittsburgh is located at the confluence of two rivers that flow into a third. This provides for fun times kayaking, boating or just walking or biking along its shores. With our state-of-the art and green David L. Lawrence Convention Center, excellent hotels, great attractions, the country’s most beautiful baseball park (PNC Park, pictured), cool restaurants and welcoming residents, Pittsburgh answers all the needs of meeting planners, convention attendees and tourists.

Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas. This is the Las Vegas Convention Center, my home for more than 40 years. You can say we grew up together. I started here in 1973 as a research analyst when Las Vegas welcomed fewer than 9 million visitors a year. As the president and CEO of the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority, I’m proud to say that last year we welcomed a record 41.1 million visitors, and more than a million of them came to the Las Vegas Convention Center for a meeting, convention or trade show. This city, this building, is full of energy and excitement. I have many fond memories at this convention center, from roller skating in the empty halls as a kid to attending the sold-out Beatles concert here in 1964. That’s what’s great about Las Vegas: You can always expect the unexpected. As we enter the next chapter with the expansion and renovation of the Las Vegas Convention Center, I can only imagine what else will happen inside these walls.

butch-spyridonWe believe Nashville works hard to deliver an authentic experience against our musical backdrop. The facilities, hospitality, world-class entertainment and strong relationships throughout the city are just a drop in the tip bucket of what Music City has to offer. Getting here and getting around couldn’t be easier. Nashville is perfectly positioned to draw people together. Gaylord Opryland and the Music City Center offer meeting professionals two great options in one dynamic location. We invite anyone to experience the sights and sounds of Nashville—and we think you’ll agree that this is the stuff legends are made of—after all, doesn’t it all begin with a song?

atlanta-cvb

Atlanta is known as a premier convention destination, but the people make our city truly shine as the capitol of the South. Our collaborative hospitality community is dedicated to delivering the best convention experiences in the United States, and perhaps the best example of Atlanta’s brand of Southern hospitality is our Ambassador Force. The force is a 60-plus, full-time hospitality and public safety team that serves as the face of the city. It creates a friendly environment downtown, overseeing more than a 200-block radius surrounding our convention corridor, Centennial Olympic Park. Ambassadors are often a visitor’s first introduction to Atlanta’s hospitality community. They help maintain a safe, clean and vibrant downtown, and provide information and directions to convention attendees. They’re a key component to ensuring that every meeting in Atlanta runs seamlessly.

greeensboro-convention-visitors-bureauMedium-sized with big-city characteristics and a unique brand of Southern hospitality, Greensboro is in the center of it all. Our facilities drive youth sports to the area, and with the revitalization of downtown it has become a great spot for singles as well. It’s a great place to live and visit because there’s something for everyone. We are the perfect city for outdoors enthusiasts, and every corner of the city has convenient places to shop, eat and lounge. Greensboro’s parks, gardens and greenways make for a beautiful city. One of the best things about Greensboro is the location; it is located in the middle of the state and eastern seaboard. The options are endless, the cost of living is low and the peace of mind makes Greensboro the best city.

charlotte-regional-visitors-authorityCharlotte is home to the NASCAR Hall of Fame, nearly 90 percent of its race teams and three of its most popular races. Connected to the Charlotte Convention Center, the NASCAR Hall of Fame (pictured) is one of my favorite attractions and is a stunning backdrop for a special event or meeting. With easy accessibility, unique event venues and exciting attractions, Charlotte is a high-octane host city. Charlotte Douglas International Airport, the sixth-busiest airport in the nation, is just 7 miles from Center City. And I love that Center City is so walkable and has more than 4,500 hotel rooms, as well as a wide variety of unique dining, cultural venues and nightlife options. Just like we honor the legends of NASCAR at the Hall of Fame, Charlotte is a destination that creates legendary experiences for attendees.

We were just recognized by Cvent as the top meeting spot in the country, and we can’t continue to be the No. 1 destination unless we continually evolve. And we are. We have an incredible diversity of hotel and resort properties, which will expand even further in the next few years, and we’re making news all the time with additions at our theme parks, and dining and entertainment offerings. The latest is the I-Drive 360 dining and entertainment complex with the Orlando Eye as its centerpiece. We really have so much to offer when it comes to any size meetings. Attendees will be amazed at all the things there are to do in Orlando before, during and after their meetings and events.

irving-conventionn-visitors-bureauAlthough Donny and Marie don’t hail from the Lone Star State, their most popular song is a perfect descriptor for Irving, Texas. The 275,000-square-foot Irving Convention Center at Las Colinas—and its surrounding Urban Center of gleaming buildings and waterways—is our little bit of rock and roll. Come late 2016, it will be even more so with the opening of the adjacent Irving Music Factory and its 8,000-seat, indoor-outdoor pavilion operated by Live Nation. As for a little bit country, that’s found across town, in the Irving Heritage District and the new Texas Musicians Museum (pictured). Exhibits feature items from Texas artists representing multiple musical genres, including Buddy Holly, Roy Orbison, Willie Nelson, Janis Joplin, Waylon Jennings, Destiny’s Child and more. The 18,000-square-foot building with an outdoor live-music garden was designed to also serve as a private event venue.

kevin-kaneMemphis is a unique destination because of its mix of old and new, expected and unexpected. Who would have thought to put a Bass Pro Shops inside a pyramid-shaped building on the Mississippi River? Only in Memphis. Meeting professionals and attendees in Memphis range so vastly on a scale of personality traits that it wouldn’t be fair to try to describe them with one word. They like things that are off the beaten path. In Memphis, we’re different, and we like it that way. People come here because they like our nontraditional atmosphere. There’s a good mix of traditional and historic attractions, but new things pop up all over town to let Memphis step outside the box.
