Destination Description

Known for its history and prevalence of Mayan culture, the capital city of Campeche is a launching pad for exploring the numerous preserved ruins in the area. The remnants of Mayan culture also play a significant part of the state’s contemporary culture. These sites draw a substantial number of individual travelers and group tours to the area. If the strong historical elements don’t win you over, the state’s location on the Gulf of Mexico will. The alluring tropical climate and warm waters provide the opportunity to enjoy water activities or a visit to the renowned Ria Celestun Biosphere Reserve where groups can experience one of the largest mangrove areas on the Gulf Coast. It also is home to the breeding grounds of the pink flamingo and the hawksbill sea turtles.

The region depends on much more than tourism dollars as it is a top producer of timber, salt, corn, sugar cane, and is the center for the oil discoveries off the coast.  It’s off the beaten path, but Campeche has so much to offer groups seeking historical sites, eco-adventures, delicious local dining fare in a coastal setting. Major international hotels offer a wide range of choices for small to modest-sized events.
