Weak Euro Helps Boost Business Travel

The dark economic cloud hanging over Europe actually had a silver lining for the airline industry. An International Air Transport Association report released today said the weak euro helped to spur more business travel in 2011. It was one factor the Geneva-based association cited in the 5.9% increase in passenger demand compared to 2010. Passenger traffic for the month of December saw an increase of 5.4% compared to December 2010—a positive finish to a mixed year for the industry that also included fewer fatalities and no shortage of headlines about unruly celebrity behavior. Tony Tyler, IATA’s director general and CEO, warned that “2012 is still going to be a tough year.” iata.org
