The historic Community Church of Palm Springs—an abandoned spiritual center ravaged by the elements and, most recently, fire—is set for a dramatic turn-around if hotel developers get their way. Last week, a group presented a plan to the Palm Springs Architectural Advisory Committee to transform the church into a 98-room, five-story resort hotel and spa named the Orchid Tree Resort & Spa. The church, which sits in the Historic Tennis Club neighborhood of Palm Springs and is near area-staples such as the Viceroy Palm Springs and Hard Rock Hotel Palm Springs, was built in 1930 and made a historic site in 1989. The new complex would take inspiration from its original design and include a 6,671-square-foot spa, 6,133 sq. ft. of meeting space and an onsite restaurant.
