First a lazy river in the shape of Texas, now the Super Bowl. Houston is gearing up for the big game in 2017 in a big way, including opening the Marriott Marquis Houston, a 1,000-room downtown property that will be connected via skybridge to George R. Brown Convention Center. The room count will accommodate citywide conventions and the hubbub of the Super Bowl. The hotel’s 100,000 sq. ft. of new meeting space will include Houston’s largest ballroom.

The coolest features sure to wow attendees are a massive, Texas-shaped lazy river and infinity pool and a special events pavilion—all with a dynamic view of Discovery Green Park. “Our Texas Sky River truly is one of a kind,” says Jay Marsella, director of sales and marketing for the property.

“It not only is the world’s only rooftop lazy river, but the only lazy river shaped in [the image of] the state of Texas. This is such a unique feature that it in itself will become a highly visited tourist attraction. There is an incredible amount of excitement and anticipation around it from our community and customers.”

The hotel will also feature two specialty restaurants along with a full-service spa and fitness center, two-story sports bar, wine bar, cafe, and pool bar and grill. The hotel is convenient to the Theater District, Entertainment District, and shopping and dining thanks to new onsite Metro Rail lines. The project is slated to be completed by next fall, with the ultimate goal of being fully operational in time for the 2017 Super Bowl on Feb. 5 at NRG Stadium.
