Southwest Acquires AirTran

Southwest Airlines announced today that they acquired AirTran Airways, and will begin plans for integrating the two airlines. Southwest and AirTran will continue to operate independently, including their individual flyer programs—Southwest Airlines Rapid Rewards and AirTran A+ Rewards. Over time, AirTran A+ Rewards will merge into the Rapid Rewards program. The transition will take time, but will not affect any currently scheduled flights on either airline, and both rewards programs will continue to earn and redeem points. southwest.com
