Sonesta Brand Expands to Houston

The InterContinental Hotel Houston is the latest hotel owned by Hospitality Properties Trust (HPT) that the REIT plans to rebrand under its Sonesta brand. Located in Uptown Houston near The Galleria, the Four-Diamond hotel will be renamed the Royal Sonesta Hotel Houston when it comes under Sonesta management on July 16. The hotel features 485 rooms and 50,000 sq. ft. of event space.

HPT of Newton, Mass., acquired Sonesta earlier this year in a $174 million deal. Sonesta traces its roots to an American hotel company founded in 1944, but when the REIT purchased it in January, only three of the 32 hotels in its portfolio were in the United States. HPT wants to significantly expand the brand’s domestic presence. It has already reflagged hotels in Hilton Head, S.C., and Burlington, Mass., and has announced plans to convert hotels in Baltimore, Philadelphia and Orlando.
