FTC Charges Wyndham for Allowing Hackers to Steal Credit Card Info

The Federal Trade Commission filed charges against Wyndham Worldwide and three subsidiaries on Tuesday, alleging the hotel company failed to properly protect customers’ credit card data from hackers, who stole information on three occasions. The first breach occurred in April 2008 and resulted in hundreds of thousands of account numbers being transferred to an Internet domain registered in Russia. The complaint says Wyndham failed to take corrective action and there were two more subsequent breaches in 2009. Regulators say there were more than $10.6 million in fraudulent charges made to the accounts, though Wyndham says it is unaware of any customers who suffered financial losses. nytimes.com
