Greater Las Vegas Gets A Facelift
By Chuck Kapelke
March 05, 2013
A few years ago Fitzgerald’s Casino & Hotel was not the kind of place a meeting planner would consider to host a business group. Sure, the 638-room property had a fine location at the eastern end of the Fremont Street Experience, the pedestrian mall built around downtown Las Vegas. But in keeping with its roots, Fitzgerald’s was all about the casino, and the “luck of the Irish” leprechaun theme didn’t exactly lend the hotel a corporate-serious vibe.

Mega Mix in the Desert
By Chuck Kapelke

With more than 39 million visitors every year, Las Vegas is remarkably efficient when it comes to welcoming people into its arms, immersing them in a few days of memorable fun and business, then sending them back into the “real world.” And in many ways, that’s what a meeting planner’s job is, too. But when it comes to meetings, efficiency is only part of the story. The challenge is to pick just the right mix of ingredients that will make a program unforgettable while also delivering an effective business program that will demonstrate a clear return on investment to the client.

Orginal & Wild

Few places in the U.S. are as anomalous as Nevada, and perhaps no more so than Las Vegas, which thrives on surprise. But look beyond Vegas, and the state of Nevada also defies expectations.

Laughlin, Nev.
By Jessie Fetterling
November 30, 2010
Just 46 years ago, Laughlin, Nev., consisted of a single, boarded-up riverfront motel and bar. The settlement, then known as South Pointe, was left in disrepair after the construction workers who built the Davis Dam evacuated the area for other projects. Ready to cash in on the land, though, was owner of Las Vegas’ 101 Club, Don Laughlin, who purchased the 6.5-acre property for a mere $250,000. In less than two years, what’s now known as the Riverside Resort offered all-you-can-eat chicken dinners for 98 cents, 12 slot machines and two live gaming tables.

Located at the southernmost tip of Nevada, along the banks of the Colorado River (with Bullhead City, Ariz. on the other side), Laughlin is the quiet gaming destination—relative to its sister cities elsewhere in the state. There’s year-round activity, such as dinner cruises, scenic tours, water taxis, fishing and golf at the area’s six championship greens. With the riverboats Celebration and Fiesta Queen docked along the riverbanks (and available for events), boating and water sports at nearby Lake Mohave, and city lights not visible from space, Laughlin is perfect for groups who like a taste of the gaming and entertainment options that Nevada offers, but without being overwhelmed.
Served by the Laughlin Visitors Bureau, there are nine casino hotels in the city, with a total of 125,000 sq. ft. of meeting space and 10,000 hotel rooms—a perfect size for smaller and mid-size groups, and gives truth to the town’s motto: “It’s like you own the place.”
