WYOMING WIDE OPEN

By Stefanie Hoffman
Wyoming’s most famous town is really a valley (thus the “Hole”), about 80 miles long and 15 miles wide, surrounded by Rocky Mountain peaks. The community was founded in the late 1800s, with its origins in ranching and fur trapping, due to the abundance of wildlife that inhabited the area.

Here, your group can have their pick of a wide array of  meeting hotels, from budget to elegant. Just one and a half blocks from the town square, Jackson’s historic landmark, The Wort Hotel (worthotel.com), offers 2,800 sq. ft. of meeting space. It also features Jackson’s renowned Silver Dollar Bar, known for its 2,032 inlaid silver dollars, oil paintings from artist Ray McCarty and true Western atmosphere.

Numerous other resorts in Jackson Hole offer a wide array of big-city amenities. Four golf courses are within city limits, along with tennis courts, swimming pools, fitness centers and spas galore.
But your group won’t be at a loss for things to do. It’s an outdoorsman’s paradise. About 60 miles north of Jackson Hole, Yellowstone National Park (nps.gov/yell), is probably the biggest draw for visitors. As the nation’s first national park, it offers geothermal wonders and wildlife seen almost nowhere else in the world.

About 40 miles past the park’s south entrance is the famed Old Faithful, which you’ll see along with thousands of hot springs, geysers and mud pots. Grand Teton National Park (nps.gov), about 30 miles north of Jackson Hole, offers some of the most spectacular hiking, backpacking and mountain climbing around. Winding through the entire park is the Snake River, where your group can enjoy kayaking, rafting or fly-fishing. While on the river, be on the lookout for wildlife. The park is home to moose, bison, elk, mule deer, coyotes, mountain lions, antelope and black bear.

Jackson Hole is also unsurpassed for winter recreation with its close proximity to three major ski areas: Grand Targhee Resort (grandtarghee.com) about 75 minutes from Jackson, Jackson Hole Mountain Resort (jacksonhole.com) in Teton Village, and Jackson’s own Snow King Resort (snowking.com), known as the town hill, which can be seen from the downtown square.

Although skiing is always a popular choice, it’s just one of myriad unique games and recreational activities that Jackson Hole has for groups. Imagine taking your attendees on an Iditarod dog sled tour (jhsleddog.com) through snow-covered alpine forests. In the summer, you can take a few days and see the backcountry on a guided llama trek (jhllamas.com). Or take a hot-air balloon ride (tetonballooning.com) over the Grand Tetons.

At night, take your meeting on the road with an authentic chuck wagon dinner tour. Both Bar J Chuckwagon Supper and Western Show (barjchuckwagon.com) and Bar-T-Five Covered Wagon Cookout and Wild West Show (bart5.com) offer wagon rides, fresh steak and live entertainment from real cowboys.
