Destination Guide | Lake Tahoe
THE BLUE WORLD
By Chuck Kapelke
Where else in North America can groups enjoy team-building retreats in mountain forests followed by evening bonding sessions at the craps and blackjack tables? Where can executives enjoy top-notch skiing, snowmobiling, and sledding by day, then see performances by top entertainers by night, all within a few miles? Lake Tahoe, of course.
Surrounded on all sides by the Sierra Nevada Mountains, Lake Tahoe is the largest alpine lake on the North American continent. It is 22 miles long and 12 miles wide, and is nearly 1,000 feet deep on average. Tahoe sits 198 miles northeast of San Francisco, 100 miles northeast of Sacramento, and 58 miles southwest of Reno, where an airport provides 180 daily flights with nonstop service to 22 destinations around the nation.
The two primary population centers in the area are North and South Lake Tahoe, which are geographically distant from each other (about 30 minutes driving) and traditionally have not been well integrated. South Lake Tahoe has more of the larger casinos (i.e., Caesar’s, Harrah’s) and easy gondola access to Heavenly ski area, while North Tahoe, which includes the posh community of Incline Village, is closer to Reno and Squaw Valley. Both areas are divided by the California-Nevada state line, which runs directly through the lake itself, and which dictates where casinos are located.
South Lake Tahoe (bluelaketahoe.com) has six 24-hour casinos (boasting more than 7,000 slot machines and 400 gambling tables). The four biggest casino hotels alone offer more than 2,350 rooms and 80,000 square feet of meeting space. Caesars Tahoe—which is currently undergoing a transformation to become the MontBleu Resort Casino & Spa (montbleuresort.com)—has 440 rooms and 16,000 square feet of meeting space.
Harrah's Lake Tahoe, which is the only Mobil Four Star and AAA Four Diamond hotel at South Lake Tahoe, has 532 rooms and 18,000 square feet of meeting space, including a 7,000 square foot theater showroom, as well as 12 meeting rooms to accommodate 10 to 1,500 guests, and complete audio/visual capabilities. The Lakeside and Regency ballrooms have been renovated in the classic style of Lake Tahoe’s 1920s-era "grand lodge" homes. Both ballrooms can be divided into smaller meeting areas.
