Destination Guide | Ojai
LOTUSLAND (OJAI)
By Carla Breer Howard
With great ranchos, vineyards, a castle, and Eden-like resorts, California's Central Coast carries the meeting experience off into another time and place. The natural setting of a lovely verdant valley surrounded by rugged peaks made Ojai the perfect location for the recreation of the idyllic "Shangri-La" in Frank Capra's 1939 version of The Lost Horizon.
The centerpiece of Ojai is the renowned Ojai Valley Inn & Spa (303/35,000 & ojairesort.com). Built out over the years from the original classic Wallace Neff clubhouse that attracted the famous and wealthy of Southern California, the inn was meticulously restored and added onto in the original Spanish Colonial style just a few years back. The stunning results put it quickly into the pages of not only Architectural Digest, but also on the "best" lists of Condé Nast Traveler and Travel & Leisure.
