Destination Guide | Park City
EVERYTHING BUT THE STRESS (PARK CITY)
By Rob Bhatt
Park City’s reputation as a spectacular setting for winter sports was only enhanced by the fact that the destination hosted approximately one-third of the events in the 2002 Olympic Winter Games.
And the worldwide attention that this brought also shined the spotlight on the world-class amenities that bring modern sophistication to this destination all year long. Park City also hosts the majority of screening during the Sundance Film Festival, which takes place each January.
Just 36 miles away from Salt Lake City International Airport, visitors are often surprised by just how easy it is to get the destination, a 45-minute drive from downtown Salt Lake, primarily along Interstate 80.
Park City itself measures two miles from end to end, while five miles separates its three world-famous ski resorts: Deer Valley Resort, The Canyons Resort and Park City Mountain Resort. Though compact, the area abounds with more than 5,700 units and rooms, including hotels, condominiums and bed and breakfast inns. Included among these are 23 lodging properties with meeting and convention space, while 16 more offsite event and meeting venues are also available. Based on their size and scope, Park City’s meeting and events facilities are best suited for groups between 10 and 350 people, and a free area-wide transportation system makes it easy to plan après-meeting activities.
Near the entrance to Park City, the Utah Olympic Park (utahathleticfoundation.com) hosted a number of Olympic events, including the luge, bobsled, skeleton and ski jumping competitions. Today, the facility, located on 389 acres, serves as an athletic training center and is also open for public tours. The most popular activities at Olympic Park include the year round-bobsled rides on the Olympic track (crews use wheeled bobsleds on a concrete course in the summer). Hiking, mountain biking and ATV tours are available at the ski resorts, while ranches in nearby Heber Valley offer fly-fishing and horseback riding opportunities.
Located mid-mountain at Deer Valley Resort, the Stein Eriksen Lodge (175/6,000/steinlodge.com) offers serene luxury. The AAA 5-Diamond property offers fine dining in GlitreTind Restaurant and head-to-toe pampering in its European spa (the resort takes its name from the Olympic gold medal-winning skier from Norway, who also serves as Deer Valley’s director of skiing).
The four-story Park City Marriott (199/10,000/marriott.com) offers dependable service and accessibility to all of Park City’s amenities, with complementary shuttles to such attractions as Utah Olympic Park and Old Town Main Street.
Since Park City’s meeting and convention business is busiest between June and October, April-June and October-November provide opportunities to find reduced lodging rates. Keep an eye out for seasonal promotions, listed under the link to “Great Dates, Great Mountain Meeting Rates Page” on Park City’s meeting planner’s Web site (www.parkcitymeetings.com).
Park City continues to grow in the esteem of seasoned diners. New additions to the culinary scene include Shabu, recognized as one of the world’s 80 best new restaurants by Travel & Leisure magazine. The restaurant presents inventive contemporary interpretations of Asian cuisine. Meanwhile, Bill Hufferd, the veteran executive chef of Park City’s Riverhorse Café, presents fine contemporary cuisine at his new restaurant in the city’s historic Main Street district. Named The Mustang, the restaurant presents a contemporary approach to regional American favorites, offering such dishes as chile relleno stuffed with Muscovy duck confit and a “surf and turf” accompanied by pancetta, leek and goat cheese twice-baked potatoes. After dinner, lively brewpubs, taverns, wine bars and nightclubs ensure that Park City is anything but a sleepy resort town.
